Scientific Works

 Through

his correspondence with Blumentritt, he was able to came in contact with leading ethnologists, botanists and zoologist in Europe.

 Led

him to collect unfamiliar herbs, plants and shells, explored jungles and coasts seeking specimens of insects, birds, snakes and frogs.

 Sent

these to the museum of Europe, especially the Dresden Museum.

 Specimens

named in honor of Rizal: -> Draco rizali (a flying dragon) -> Apogonia rizali (a small bettle) -> Rhacophorus rizali (a rare frog)

 Also

conducted athropological, ethnographical, archaeological, geological and geographical studies.

As Physician in Dapitan

 Continual

stream of patients came from many parts of the Southern Philippines.

 In

July 1894, he told Blumentritt he had made some thousands of dollars.

 There

was little in the life of Rizal in Dapitan that he did not have a hand somewhere.

As a Teacher

 1983-

He established a school which existed until the end of his exile in July 1986.  It was a school 50 years ahead of its time wherein he taught his students to behave like men.  Instead of charging them tuition fees, he made them work on his garden, fields and construction projects in the community.

 While

50 years ahead of its time, in the matter of entrance exam, the school was unique.

 Only

when he had begun to prove himself in the school would he be admitted to secret of the entrance test, learned how he had been admitted and be instructed what to do when the next candidate presented himself.

“To be a possessor of a secret is to know responsibility, and from this all else developed in his scheme to make boys behave like men.”

 February

1964- he wrote to General Blanco appealing for his liberty.  But, there was no answer.  When General Blanco went to Dapitan in October that year, he told Rizal about: -> possibility of transferring him slightly nearer to things (Iocos or La Union) -> the option to plead ill-health and ask to be transferred to Spain.

 1895-

a mood of gloom and resignation had come over him.  It was one of those moments of lowness and depression which twice already in his life had a particular outcome: -> when he had fallen in love with Segunda Catigbac -> the moment that he courted Nelly Boustead.  February 1985- Josephine Bracken arrived in Dapitan with his stepfather.
