Why is milk banking important? Human milk bank is the best nutrition option for babies. It provides unique benefits that cannot be duplicated by formula like antibodies to fight disease and infection and protection form allergies. Sick premature babies are at high risk of gastrointestinal disease and infections. Often their mothers are not able to supply their milk because they are under great stress or are ill themselves. Providing these fragile infants to pasteurized human milk gives them a fighting chance on LIFE.

Who can donate? Mothers who are interested to donate must fulfill the following criteria: In good health and able to breastfeed Currently nursing a baby less than one year old Not using certain medications Negative for HIV, HTLV, Hepatitis B and C and Syphilis Not using illegal drugs Non-smoker Does not drink alcohol Did not receive blood transfusion or organ transplant
Wash hands with soap and water then dry using clean towel. Clean your breast using a cloth Wipe nipple first before the breast Use sterile bottle to collect milk. Mark it with your name and date Sterilize milk containers by boiling for five minutes Hand expression is the best way to express your milk. Newly collected milk should be placed immediately in the freezer.
Q&A HOW IS DONOR MILK PROCESSED? How is donor milk processed? The collected donor milk is kept frozen. Once enough is available for pasteurization, the milk is thawed, cultured, pooled and poured into special bottles. These are heated at 62.5°C using the Holder method in a pasteurizer. The milk is then quickly cooled to 20°C. A sample of the pasteurized milk undergoes microbiological testing. Only pasteurized milk with negative microbiological test is dispensed. WHY IS MILK PASTEURIZED? Pasteurization ensures that human milk is safe. Some immunological properties are destroyed by the process but pasteurized milk retains most of the anti-infective properties as fresh milk. Are there other milk banks in the Philippines?
