Cloud 10 News and Views from Mr. Sommers 10th Grade ESL Class

Bienvenidos! Nabdaadi! Croeso! Nqee! Welcome!

Well, it was quite a delightful summer, if I do say so myself. But now, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder and that can mean only one thing: Time for school! I am very excited to have you all back for some more fun. I am also excited to announce the arrival of our newsletter! It’s a way for all of us (students, myself and parents) to stay in touch!

About Me My name is Kyle Sommers (most students just call me Mr. Kyle). I am 27 years old. I have a wife named Katharine. I have taught Edison High School English as a Second Language Class for 2 years now. I am the Assistant Coach of the Speech Team. Favorite Song Assignment

In the coming days, students will be asked to bring in their favorite song to share with the class and then discuss why it is important to them. This is a get-to-know-you activity with the added bonus of learning the specific language needs of this year’s students. Start thinking about your favorite song! Mine is ‘Ice Hockey Hair’ By the Super Furry Animals! You’ll find out why in a few days!

Mrs. Jenkins, our principal, has instructed the teachers of Edison High School to remind students and their parents of a few key points and dates: 1. Students are not permitted to wear backpacks. There is ample time in between class periods for students to return to their lockers. 2. The first Pep Fest will be held in the Gymnasium on September 29th at 2 PM. Classes will be shortened that day to accommodate the fun. 3. If you qualified for the Assisted Lunch Program, be sure to pick up your vouchers from Lunch Lady Doris in the Cafeteria as soon as possible 4. Have fun! You are here to be educated in a positive, safe, interesting learning environment. 5. The first formal school dance is Saturday, Oct 9th the day after the Homecoming Football game. See you in the halls! -Mrs. J.

You kids still like Flavor Flav, right? Anyway, he’s a rapper. Sort of. This is just to get you thinking about music! 2

First Project! For our first project, students will be graded on a presentation they are going to give on a country of their choosing. The presentations will be 15 minutes long and will be the culmination of a 6Week long survey of Global Geography. Don’t worry; we won’t just be studying geography for six weeks. There are other English Language Activities planned, as well as trips to the library (both the school library and the Central library in Downtown Minneapolis). Start thinking about a country you find interesting! A sign up sheet will go around during the second week of school, ensuring no two students choose the same country.

This is Wales, a country in Western Europe that borders England. It is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It has a town called ‘Llanfairpwllgwyngyll!’

A note on the name of the newsletter: A common expression in English is to be on ‘cloud 9’ meaning you are very happy. If you are on Cloud 10, then, wouldn’t you be even happier? PLUS we’re in 10th grade! There will be more idioms and their meanings to come with each issue.
