Clarksville is located in Mecklenburg County in South Central Virginia, about 7 miles north of the North Carolina border, approximately 1 hour north of Raleigh, Durham and the Research Triangle Park; about 90 minutes southwest of Richmond, or 3 hours west of Norfolk/Virginia Beach. Clarksville was built on three river bluffs on the Roanoke river in an area which had been settled by Occoneechee Indians from 1250 to 1676.
