1. In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia. 2. Alaska is the 49th state. 3. Alaska is full of natural resources: fish, timber, coal, and copper.
4. The United States took over the government in Hawaii and made it the 50th state. 5. Hawaii became a state in 1898. We have not gained anymore states since Hawaii.
6. The country of Cuba wanted independence from Spain. 7. When the United States sent a ship named the Maine to Cuba, it exploded while in the harbor. 8. The U.S. entered the war to help Cuba. 9. Theodore Roosevelt led a group of men called the “Rough Riders”.
10.The war was called the Spanish American War. It ended quickly and Cuba won its independence. 11.Cuba is still an independent country today.
12.Theodore Roosevelt was elected governor of New York after the war. 13.He then became vice president under President William McKinley. 14.When McKinley was assassinated, Roosevelt became the youngest president ever. He was 43 years old.
15.The Panama Canal was built while Theodore Roosevelt was president. 16.The canal took 10 years to build and links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
17.Building the canal was difficult because of mosquitoes. They carried diseases like Yellow Fever and Malaria. 18.The canal is important to the shipping industry. 19. Panama is located on the isthmus between North and South America. An isthmus is a narrow
20.Theodore Roosevelt set up the National Parks for our country. 21. He did this to protect forests and wildlife.
