Argentine Tango comes to Nelson Athleticism and dazzling artistry combine in the Argentine Tango of Jonatan Baez and Julia Gorin (left) world class dancers, teachers and choreographers offering classes in Nelson the week of April 4 to 8. Hailing from Buenos Aires, the couple tours the world performing and teaching at well known festivals. Their unique teaching style is the quintessence of their experience, not only in tango but also in Argentine folklore, ballet, jazz, theatre and dance therapy. Both Baez and Gorin began their dance training early. Over the years, Baez has earned many awards in both tango and folklore dance. Gorin studied music and classical and modern ballet from a young age and began tango in 2000. They began dancing together 2011 and have appeared in many tango shows and performed at the most prestigious Milongas in Buenos Aires. The Kootenay Dance Beat Society is the sponsor for this evening. Beginner classes are also offered Saturday and Sunday mornings as well as an All Levels class on musicality on Sunday afternoon. Two intermediate classes are offered on Friday evening, followed by a brief Practica with Baez as guest DJ. Intermediate classes continue both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Saturday night is the Grand Milonga (dress up dance) at the Taghum Hall, from 8:30 to 11:30 pm featuring a performance by Jonatan Baez and Julia Gorin with music by DJ Diego Smola, from Calgary. Spectators are welcome to attend for the performance portion by donation. Monday evening, April 8, an additional class TBA is offered followed by more great tango music and fun. This winter marks the 17th year of the Meadow Mountain Signage Plan: A community and government sanctioned legal closure of the ski terrain tendered to Selkirk Snowcat Skiing by the Province of BC under Prohibition No. 9. aim of creating a positive and solution focused dialogue, students in the Peace Studies 101 class are asking the community to join in on a conversation at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Castlegar on March 29. “It may not be issues that are addressed openly in the public, but it’s definitely something that has been lingering in our communities for a bit,” says first year Selkirk College student Kirsten Jansen, one of 31 students helping organize the event. “Having an open discussion will give the public an opportunity to find out what is happening and have their input.” With the idea that open dialogue leads to better understanding, students aim to build relationships with the community. International students who are part of the Peace Studies 101 class will share their experience and those in attendance will be encouraged to bring forward questions. “As an Indian student, I know what issues I face,” says 21 year old Ramanjeet Kaur. “We want to address this openly so that everybody gets a better understanding and we can take action on issues.” Kaur says challenges faced by international students include accommodation, employment, transportation and acceptance. Many of the issues are not unique to international learners, but due to the cultural differences, difficulties can become compounded. Students want to let those interested know a little bit more about themselves and how they navigate both challenges and opportunities. “Before we come here, we do the research to find about

One of the goals of this evening will be to tell others where we come from and how we live our lives.” Though she finds the West Kootenay an accepting community, Kaur has experienced some instances of negativity over the last couple of years. While riding the bus, she was speaking on the phone to her mother in her native language and was asked by another passenger to get off if she was not going to speak English. Veteran Selkirk College instructor Randy Janzen teaches the Peace Studies 101 class. Though Selkirk College leadership regularly meet with community leaders about supporting international learners, Janzen is pleased to see his students’ journey down this avenue of grassroots conversation. “In many ways, Canada is a very tolerant country, but the quickest way for that to break down is when people stop talking,” Janzen says. “Immigration and race are two topics on which people have very strong opinions, and yet at the same time, we seem to be very hesitant to talk about them, outside anonymous online forums. We need to develop safe spaces where we can come together to have important conversations, while at the same time, get to know each other.” Everyone is invited to the community conversation and snacks with an international flavor will be served. The event runs from 4 to 6 pm on Friday, March 29 at St. Rita’s Church, 513 7th Avenue in Castlegar. – Bob Hall

The Merriwake finds a home A historic Japanese Canadian fishing boat that is the last of its kind in Canada will now be preserved with the efforts of the Slocan Valley Historical Society (SVHS). The Merriwake, a 31´ gill netter built in 1929 by master builder Isamu “Sam” Matsumoto, has been purchased by the SVHS, which intends to restore the vessel for a dry land display in the Village of Slocan. “We are grateful to so many people for the funds needed to purchase the boat, for saving her from Kootenay Lake and for giving her safe harbor as well as transporting her to her new home,” says Joyce Johnson, president of the SVHS. “Previous owner Ted Fitzgerald has entrusted the society with this important artifact. It truly has taken a village. The next step is to apply for grants and raise funds for the restoration of the boat and the creation of the display.” The Merriwake had been submerged in Kootenay Lake near Kaslo before being salvaged a couple years ago. Local shipwright Eric Chevalier of The Copper Nail in Bonnington will begin the restoration of the Merriwake. Nelson engineer Ted Nunn and Slocan Valley designer Eric Clough will assist with the structure which will house the boat. Slocan logger and SVHS member Gary Burns will donate timbers for the shelter. Kaslo historian Ian Fraser will create the interpretive signage which will detail the boat’s journey and some of the Japanese Canadian history in the area and former owner Ted Fitzgerald will create short film/picture montages to document her journey including her restoration. “This is a local effort but it’s important on a national scale,” says Johnson. “We are supported in this initiative by the Village of Slocan, Slocan Valley Historical Trail Society, and Recreation Sites and Trails BC. Our hope is that the Merriwake will bring our community together in a shared project that will be a place of pride but also reflection, meditation and learning.” Anitra Winje, vice-president of the SVHS, adds “The Merriwake is valuable for what she represents – the craftsmanship and social/economic/cultural contributions of Japanese Canadian boat buildings and fishermen. But she is also a poignant and essential reminder of the terrible injustice endured by Japanese Canadians. We must not forget this part of our past.
