To Accomplish the Impossible: Our Changing World and NCLB as seen in Schoen and Fusarelli’s Work “Innovation, NCLB and the Fear Factor”
By J.
NCLB at 7 years... • NCLB and its Control over a Title I School • AYP Achievements for Sub Groups- Particularly SPED and ELL- constantly raise the bar of achievement • Principals, APs have had to become adept at manipulating the system to achieve success in problematic areas or face the consequences and stigma of failure
NCLB In its Own Words... • “Meeting the challenge of a changing world” (USDOE, 2007) • Ensuring that students have “practical problem solving skills” (Spellings, 2007) • Rigorous Coursework, Scientificly Proven Methods of Instruction, Holding Schools Accountable
• Carnegie Council’s contention that we must alter methods and curricular foci to better reflect the challenges our students will face in the future • Christensoen’s Contention: The Application of Business Principles and Economic Goals to Education • Innovation , Critical Thinking, Adaptablity, Creativity, and Problem Solving Skills for the 21st
What Schoen and Fusarelli Suggest... • Upgrades of Teacher Prep • Greater Teacher Autonomy • Eschew Curriculum Testing in favor of Knowledge and skills in Literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and innovation, information and media literacy skills
Currently... • Teachers, APs and Principals live in fear • Untested strategies and innovations have fallen by the side of the road in favor of tried and true test prep creating a myopia • Teacher burn out
Additional Changes... • The 110th Congress could not decide on the revisions needed so it has been pushed back to January, 2009 • Senator Kennedy’s Endorsement and the Subgroup Designation • Growth Models • Testing Higher-Order Skills
