Ten-year-old shrine with a deity similar to Narasimha in Hampi Kattavakkam, a village near Walajabad, has a temple, constructed approximately 10 years back, for a rare deity worshipped as Vishvaroopa Lakshmi Narasimha Swami (Vishnu). Kattavakkam, a village near Walajabad, has a temple, constructed approximately 10 years back, for a rare deity worshipped as Vishvaroopa Lakshmi Narasimha Swami (Vishnu). This majestic image is in a seated posture with the seven hoods of Adisesha outspread above the head. He holds the discus (chakra) in the right upper hand and the bow and arrow together in the left upper hand.
The lower right hand is in the pose of offering protection (abhaya hasta) and the lower left hand is in the boon-giving pose (varada hasta). Mahalakshmi, holding a lotus in the left hand, with the right hand in abhaya hasta, is seated on Narasimha’s left lap. The UNESCO World Heritage site, Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagar dynasty from 1336 AD to 1565 AD, near the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, has a huge monolithic Narasimha image, 6.7 metres high, in a damaged condition.
This deity was consecrated in the reign of Krishnadeva Raya in 1528 AD, as mentioned in an inscription.
In Hampi, the mutilated image of Narasimha is seen seated on the coils of Adisesha whose seven hoods are outspread above and with the yoga-patta (band) around the knees.
Narasimha’s four arms which once held various weapons and the image of goddess Lakshmi, once seated on the left leg, have been broken. Although the weapons held in Narasimha’s hands and the Lakshmi image are not seen today, the pieces once found in the debris near this temple reveal that this deity once held a chakra in the upper right hand, a bow and arrow in the upper left hand, while the lower hands were in the abhaya and varada mudras. The deity in Kattavakkam is similar to the one in Hampi of the Vijayanagara times.

There was a beautiful Sri Lakshmi Narasimha temple at this village and Sri Varada was residing here for one year and HIS utsavams were performed here.The idols were taken to this temple from original varadaraja temple thru a tunnel which can be even seen today. In order to remind of this incident even today Sri Varada visits this temple during Chitra Pournami day. Another interesting note is that the famous well from which Sri Ramanuja used to offer water to Sri Varada is situated near to this temple. The Well is called SalaikiNaru meaning the Well near the road. The deities here are so beautiful and the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha is 7 ft tall salagrama and Sri Soundarya valli Thayar is 5 ft tall. Utsava moorthy is called as Sri Soundarya varadan.There are also vigrahas of Sri Hanuman, Sri Andal and Sri Kannan. What ever you read is the History.What happens today.. The Rajagopuram is totally damaged and even you have to use alternate entrance to visit the temple. Further no sanctum santorum for Hanuman and Andal. The madappalli (kitchen) is house for rats and mouse.There is no money for daily aradana too.. The local residents and archakas have approached few mutts and the response is not very encouraging. BUT with the blessings of Sriya: pathi YOU can make a difference to this temple. The current estimate is around 15 lakhs of rupees to renovate the gopuram and other maintenance works. Injimedu is also called Yagna Vedhikai, as many yagna rituals are performed in the village. Since the time of Sri Sashta Parankusha Yatheendra Maha Desikan,[when?] Sri Yaga Samrakshana Ramar founded many Yagams and Vedams. Srimath Ahobila mutt was started by Srimath Aadhivan Sadagopan swamy, born circa 1300 A.D. He played a role in the construction of several temples in the area. In this Aacharya Parampara, Sri Sashta Parankusha swamy (the sixth Jeeyar) was also involved in the maintenance of these temples. These temples were destroyed in consecutive invasions and only the Ramar temple was left. There are currently three main temples in the village: Perumal Temple, Sri Lakshminarasimhar Temple, and Siva Temple. Injimedu Periyamalai Temple Injimedu is also known for the Injimedu Periyamalai Temple which was built in memory of Lord Shiva. This ancient temple is considered to be more than 2500 Years old as per the available historical accounts.[citation needed] Mythologically it is associated with Krythayuga.

Temple History This temple is situated in the place called Injimedu which is also known as Yagna Vedhikai or Yagnamedu in ancient times as, in Vedic and ancient times a number of yagas (yagam) and Yagnas were done to the lord by number of Rishis in this sthalam. This sthalam is situated on the banks of river Cheyyar. This Sthalam (temple) is also called as Dhakshina Ayodhi and Narasimhapuram. This temple is the third temple in Pancha Rama Kshethrams (5 holy Rama temples) in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu and one of the Pancha Narasimha Kshetrams in Tamil Nadu. In this temple Lord Sri Narasimhar is wearing sri Pathuka as he is ready to start, when bakthas pray and call him. Utchavar Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar and sri Lakshmi Hayagreevar are also present in the Narasimhar shrine. Sri Yagna Ramar Sanithi: Sri Bharatwaja Maharishi has established (Prathistai) Sri Ramar idol in this temple. Sri Sita Devi Lakshmana Garuda Hanumantha sametha Sri Ramar is in a separate shrine. Here in this temple Sri Ramar blesses the devotees as Sri Yagna Samrakshana Ramar with Sita Devi. Sri Ramar is holding bow and arrow in his hands. A very special and unique thing in this temple is, Lord Narasimhar is present on the top of the Rama's bow as to provide maha sakthi to destroy the demons. One can see Sri Narasimhar's face on the top of the bow in Sri Rama's hand. Sri Lakshmana with bow and arrow is standing next to Lord Rama. Sri Garudar (Periya Thiruvadi) is standing, praying to the Lord on the right and Sri Anjaneyar (Siriya Thiruvadi) is standing, praying to the Lord on the lef. It is very rare to see Sri Garuda and Sri Anjaneya swamy both together with Lord Sri Rama in any temple. Legend : 1) Once there was an ego battle between Brahma and Vishnu, they set off to reach the top and bottom of Shiva as a competition. During that time Thazamboo (Lavender tree flower) gave a false witness to Shiva that Brahma had reached the top of Shiva. Knowing this, Shiva cursed Thazampoo that it should not be used in any Shiva pooja. In order to get rid of the curse, it stands here as the Sthala Vruksham. Nandhi’s footsteps are seen here. 2) Mythology has it that the wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvathi was performed at Mount Kailash, the eternal and ethereal abode of Lord Shiva. All the Devas, Rishis, Saints, along with Lord Vishnu, Brahma and their consorts assembled to witness the marriage. The northern part Himalayan Mountain, sunk in whereas the Southern part has gone up. So to make it balance, As desired by Lord Shiva, Agastya Risha stood on top of the Mount and hence the Mount sub-merged into the earth. Rishi Agastya witnessed the marriage of Lord Shiva with Parvathi from the top of this Mount. Therefore the prayers of the devotees for their marriages are getting fulfilled. 3) NANDI, became ‘Vaahana’ of Shiva : Nandi, son of saint Siladara performed penance seeking blessings and acceptance of Lord Shiva. It is from this Holy Hill Periyamalai that Lord Shiva blessed Nandi to be His Vehicle, for the first time. Since then, this Hill is venerated and worshipped by the Saints and Devatas as a sacred place. Worshipping Lord Nandeeshwara of this temple is regarded as very sacred as He grants the prayers. The village was called “Nandipuravinnagaram” (Sky high village, Nandipuram) as Periyamalai was very tall once upon a time. 4) Amavasya Thithi Rishi Siladara performed penance. Lord Shiva appeared before the saint, and asked him what boon he wants. Rishi requested Lord to attain Mukthi along with the mortal body (sthula sarira) Lord granted his prayer. Joyfully when saint was traversing in the sky, Rishi Narada intercepted and enlightened the Rishi that he cannot enter the heaven with his mortal body. There is a inner secret of his birth. He has to return to earth to commence the Amavasya Thithi to redeem the bondaged soul from their sins. Thus the Rishi started the Amavasya (offering prayers to departed souls) by wearing the Holy Grass Minji. This word Minji has become Inji and now it is the name of the village itself i.e. INJIMEDU. 5) Anointment of Herbal Shivalinga Saint Devadootha prayed Lord Shiva for many years. Lord appeared before him and granted his prayer. Hence Saint Devadootha anointed the Shivalinga in ancient times on top of the Mountain. The Linga was made out of herbal plants. 6) Ganga Lord Shiva created a Holy Ganga on top of the mountain as the Rishis prayed for water for their use. This Holy spring is perennial and is very sweet and cures many diseases. Description : This ancient temple is considered to be more than 2500 Years old as per the available historical accounts. Mythologicaly it is associated with krythayuga. Lord Shiva is in the form of lingam and is named as THIRUMANI CHERAI UDAYAR (highly decorative and attractive Shiva). The Goddess Parvati is named THIRUMANI NAYAGI (pleasant and blissful). This Shivalinga is 5 feet 6 inches tall atop the hill. Shivalinga is very elegant, attractive and vibrant. From any account, this is the tallest Shivalinga atop a Hill in India. This Temple is regarded as an abode of eternity (Mukthi) (Moksha) & also
southern kailash. This small 200f high hillock top temple has about 51 covered steps. So rain or sun will not affect the devotees. This is a 2500 years old temple which got ransacked about 700 years ago by various invasions. The Thirumanicherai Shiva lingam which was lef alone without any pooja/ worship for nearly 700 years, finally got a facelif and the Kumbabhisheham took place in 1999. Sanghu theertham is present in the hill in the shape of Sanghu. It is said that there is a spacious cave here where Pampatti Chithar is living in the form of a snake. There is a Holy spring which is perennial and is very sweet and cures many diseases. Edicts : An epigraph dating back to 1126 A.D. by Chola King Vikramadhitya atop the hillock describes the glory of Lord Shiva, the name of God, Village, Ruler and Sculptor. Another astonishing rock edict echoes like the Buddha principle that if any one goes to the temple their desires would be quenched. There are altogether 33 statues of different deities installed. There is a Dhyana Mantapa at the bottom. A cave and a Deepa Mantapa on top are adding beauty to the elegant temple.

The Shiva Linga is made of Navabhashanam. Abhishekam is done from the water brought from the spring water. The Abhisheka water cures many diseases - snake bites, infertility and so on.
This mount was tall approximately to the height of Himalayas. Therefore it was called Periyamalai. Agasthya witnessed the marriage of Lord Shiva in Kailash from the top of this mount before it was pressed down.It sank down when Agasthya kept his feet on the peak.

History:
When Agasthya was sent from Mount Kailash to balance the weight which was immense due to the people and Devas gathered for wedding of Shiva and Parvathi he happened to come to this place. The weight in Kailash made the mount come down. Agasthya stood on this mount which went down to balance the level of the ground such that mount Kailash would not come down any more. The peak of Periyamalai was penetrating upward.
Sage Silathiyar wanted the boon of going to Kailash in his own body. Sage Naradha told him that his ancestors were wandering without food and water. So, he told him to perform the ritual of offerings to them. Silathiyar picked up a Ilanji Grass (dharpai) and gave offerings to his ancestors. This place was full of Ilanji Grass. Therefore this was called Ilanjimedu which has been trasformed to Injimedu. The practice of Pithru Tharpanam is done here.
Later a Sage performed penance towards Lord Shiva here. To disturb his penance an elephant brought water from the spring and splashed on him. He was motionless. The elephant tried to reach the sage but was stopped by a fire circle around the Sage. The determination of the sage was praised by lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked him what he wanted. He said that he wanted the Lord to stay here so that his devotees could worship him and get their wishes fulfilled. Shiva agreed and the Sage created a Navabhashanalinga and installed it here.
There was an ego battle between Brahma and Vishnu that who was siperior than the other. Brahma and Vishnu said to search the top and bottom of Shiva respectively. It was a deal that if Brahma could find the top and Vishnu could find the bottom of Lord Shiva they were considered superior if they could complete their task first. The Thazhampoo which fell from Shiva's head was a false witness in support of Brahma as he lied that he had seen the top of Shiva. Shiva cursed
Thazhampoo and Brahma. What happened to Brahma is entirely a different story. The family of Thazhampoo could not flourish due to this curse. In order come out of the curse it stands as Sthala Viruksha here always praising Lord Shiva.
Nandhi was the son of Sage Siladharan. Nandhi performed penance seeking the blessings and acceptance of Lord Shiva. Shiva blessed Nandhi from this hill to be his Vahana. Therefore worshipping Nandhi here is considered to be very sacred. Participating in Pradhosha poojas will have more good effects than in any other temple.
Former top bureaucrat turns swami, swaps suitand-tie for saffron robe and rudraksh-mala Anisha Sheth | The News Minute | July 11, 2014 | 5.04 pm IST Afer retirement, an IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre has discarded crisply ironed shirts for a saffron garb, rudraksh mala, Shaivite naama, and talks about “continuing the aspirations of his previous birth in his current life”. Former Principal Secretary of Karnataka I R Perumal has now changed his name to Sivayogi Perumal Swami. Perumal is president of the Injimedu Cherai Udaiar Charity Trust, which is constructing a temple dedicated to Shiva atop a hillock in Thiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu. Possibly, his story might not have been as remarkable were he not a retired IAS officer. Permual ended his career in the civil services in 2012. “I was a free man on August 1,” he told The News Minute. Now, he is building a temple dedicated to Shiva, to whom, he claims he owes everything in life. In 2011, a Kannada news channel telecast a story on I R Perumal, then Principal Secretary for Sports and Youth Services. In it, the officer said he owed his success as an IAS officer to the Shivalinga atop the Injimedu hillock. Perumal told The News Minute that there was an “ancient” Shivalinga which had existed atop the hillock “since time immemorial”, and that nobody knew who had installed it. Then, he went on to recount the history of the original Injimedu village which had been destroyed in a war and rock edicts supposedly found near the Shivalinga. Afer this war, the Shivalinga lay abandoned for 500 years, with no one to offer any pooja, Perumal said. Enter Perumal’s father. Perumal said that his father was a farmer and that he had some land which he lost. They lived near the base of the hillock. One day, his father met a sanyasi who was living near the base of the hillock. The sanyasi told Permual’s father that he would get his land back if he worshipped the Shivalinga. Perumal’s father was also told that if he lit the lamp top the hillock every year on the day of a particular festival, he would be blessed with a son who would one day renovate the old temple and construct a new one. Perumal’s father did get his land back and carried out the sanyasi’s instructions. Perumal says that he believes in the power of the Shivalinga completely. As a child, he saw goddess Parvati with a trishul in her hand and a crown on her head along with seven other goddesses “going round and round” on the hillock. “I told my father about this, and he said that I was the one who was born to renovate the temple.” Perumal said. Asked about his duties as an IAS officer, Permual said: “I served humanity (as an IAS officer). Now I can live for the spiritual side.” He claimed that he had ensured that five lakh people got ration cards because of his efforts. “The rules are such, very rigid, so I got amendments for the poor. The deserving people were ignored. I took strong steps and (they were given ration cards).” He said that everywhere he went, he did good. “God’s gif is with me. Whichever department I worked in, became a profitable department.” Now, in the last two years since he retired, Perumal has collected funds for the temple and says that he has had a gopura built over the idol, steps to the hillock have been laid and 33 other deities had been installed. He said that the trust he is heading has been registered under the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act. He said that currently, 100 people came to the temple everyday and that he eventually planned to construct hotels and dormitories for devotees, and even start an “anna daana” programme. Asked if such extensive infrastructure was needed for just 100 devotees, Perumal said: “When Dharmasthala was started 400 years ago, there was nothing there. Unless you provide facilities, people will not go. See how it is today. People have faith, crowds will start coming.” To a question on whether people were contributing to the construction of the temple, Perumal said: “Hindus and Muslims contribute 3 percent (of their incomes to religious activities) per annum. Hindus give (offerings) to many temples and gods, so it gets divided. For our temple (to receive monetary contributions) it will take time,” he said, but very cheerfully.
Periyamalai Siva Temple, Injimedu, Arani, Thiruvannamalai Sri Injimedu Periyamalai Siva Temple is situated in Tamilnadu. It is also one of the prominent Shiva Temples of South India. The history of this place is, during Shiva Parvathi kalyanotsava many devotees and followers of both Shiva and Parvathi had visited Khailash and the Khailash couldn’t withstand the weight, at that time Lord Shiva asked Agastya Mahamuni to go to South part. When Maharshi did the same, the Khailash could withstand its strength and during that time he did the pratisthapana of Lord Shiva. For centuries together many kings were devotees to this temple. It is also believed that Shiladhara did Tapas in this place to get the blessings from Lord Shiva. People visit this temple for all kind of problems related to education, property, money and even health. This temple is near to Vellore and Arani so one can opt for staying in any of these cities. Vellore is preferable as it has good number of hotels and well connected by railways (Katpadi junction) and roadways. Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Injimedu There are lots of buses that run from Chennai to Polur travel via Injimedu. The temple is found near to the stopping and can get the clear route from the local people. Lots of buses also run from Vandhavasi. Srimath Aadhivan Sadagopan Swamy and Injimedu: Srimath Ahobila mutt was started by Srimath Aadhivan Sadagopan swamy, who was born almost 630 years back, has came forward in constructing lots of temples. In this Aacharya Parampara, Sri Sashta Parankusha swamy, who was the sixth Jeeyar has constructed and helped almost 60 temples and has put in lots of great scholars who are well versed in vedams to maintain those temples. Injimedu – Yagnamedu: One such sthalam is "Yagnamedu". And as the days progressed, this sthalam is called as "Injimedu". Srimath Azhagiya Singar and Sri Varadhar: Srimath Azhagiya Singar 45th Jeeyar had a great affinity towards Kanchi Sri Varadhar. So, he wanted to install his Divya Mangala Roopam in this temple. So, he installed Sri Varadhar and Sri Perundevi thaayar in this temple. Sri Yaga Samrakshana Ramar: From the time of Sri Sashta Parankusha Yatheendra Maha Desikan, it is said that Sri Ramar of this sthalam has found lots of Yagams and Vedams. Problem in marriage, Puthra Bhagyam, etc., are said to vanish if we visit this sthalam and get the dharshan of this Sri Ramar. Sri Ramar is said to be found almost 1500 years back and it is said that he emerged from yagam, so he is called with the Thiru Naamam "Sri Yaga Samrakshana Ramar". Specifically, if people born in Moola, Aayilyam nakshatrams and are found to face any problem in getting married, they can visit this sthalam, so that their problems gets cured. PunarNirmaanam of the temple: At present, the temple is being renovated. Due to the lack of funds, the work of the temple is getting delayed a bit.
