NAPLAN NEWS Number 8 – Wednesday 29 May 2018

Information for NAPLAN markers

It’s pleasing to observe that many markers are beginning to pick up the pace while maintaining their accuracy. Stay alert Remember to keep taking regular breaks . while marking. Stand up and do some stretches every now and again

Logging Off When taking a break, please log off eMARK . This closes your session. If you don’t log off, you will remain logged on for 30 minutes. This could adversely affect your marking statistics. Phoning In Please phone your Group Leader when:  You are out of range on a script (5 up or 5 down across the scores)  You need a second opinion on any criteria  You are unable to work a shift Scoring Ideas We have noticed that some markers are underscoring ideas, in particular, scoring a 2 when the script is a 3. Often if a script is a 3 in Audience (an internally consistent persuasive text that attempts to support the reader by developing a shared understanding of context) it has “ideas that are supported with some elaboration” or “one idea with more developed elaboration”. It is this idea/ideas that “support the reader” with the “shared understanding of context”. We also need to be clear about the meaning of ‘idea’ and ‘elaboration’. If the script has ideas (2 or more) and those ideas are elaborated (e.g., examples, explanations) the script scores at least a 3 in Ideas. Unusual scripts If you receive a script that has a stamp on it with the criterion listed and marks next to it, please just send this straight to review, don’t score it yourself. Start planning your weekend marking now! Weekends are a really good time to catch up if you are running behind with your commitment to the project. If you are looking for extra support from your Group Leader, the weekend is a good time to come in and chat with them.

CRITERION

SCORE

Control 9

Tues 29 May

2

Shows basic awareness of audience expectations through attempting to orient the reader. Provides some information to support reader understanding.

2. Text Structure

2

Text contains two clearly identifiable structural components – an introduction and a body. The reasons in the body are briefly foreshadowed in the introduction (insted of a plaing class room). The final sentence is an ending statement and is not considered a conclusion.

3. Ideas

2

One idea with simple elaboration.

4. Persuasive Devices

2

Uses three or more instances of persuasive devices that support the writer’s position (at least two types). Opinion and reasons - there are several reasons for the one opinion. Conditional (if you dont have …).

5. Vocabulary

2

Mostly simple words.

6. Cohesion

2

Some correct links between sentences. Correct use of substitution (That’s why). Noun-pronoun references (decorashun/it; everyone/they/there [their]) are mostly accurate.

7. Paragraphing

1

Structural breaks only. There are correct breaks between the introduction and the body, and the body and the ending statement.

2

Two or more correct sentences required. Three complex sentences are correct: reasons 3 and 4, and the ending sentence. Error in the first sentence: decorashun should be plural. This is followed by four fragments (dependent clauses) – cannot read out full stops). (Note: in this script, the fragments reason 1, etc. are considered stems to each reason and are not included in assessing sentence structure.) Too many errors for Cat. 3.

2

Some correct use of sentence level punctuation (at least two accurately punctuated sentences - beginning and end). First sentence and the third reason (a sentence) are punctuated correctly. (Note: punctuation of bullet, dot, or other point forms is considered when assessing other punctuation, not sentence punctuation. The stems in this script function as bullet points and in this case their punctuation does not influence the score.)

2

Correct spelling of most simple and some common words (at least two). Incorrect simple words: lookes, wool (wall). Correct common words: think, should, around, class room, make, class, reason, nice, every one/s, they, don’t, cant, why, hope. Incorrect common words: insted, plaing, there (their). Common word because/becuse correct and incorrect. Correct difficult word: decorated. Incorrect difficult words: decorashen/s, picter/picters.
