All names in bold are the ones to add to your display. Read each description, definition, and scripture to go along with each name. Discuss each one with your family adjusting to meet the intellectual and age differences of your children. Choose which ones you want to do for family home evening. Leave the others to learn one each night or morning before family prayers. There are a total of 15 names included with this lesson. Read in the Bible Dictionary under the heading of Christ. This gives a simple but great explanation of who Jesus Christ is and also lists some of the names He is known by. Anointed One - read about it in the Bible Dictionary. Messiah - also read in the Bible Dictionary. These readings help us learn that Anointed One, Messiah and Christ all mean the same thing. They just come from different origins – Greek (Anointed), Hebrew (Messiah), and Aramaic. John 4:25-26 "The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he." 2 Nephi 2:6 "Wherefore, redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for he is full of grace and truth." Only Begotten Son - Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God, the first born to our Heavenly Father in the spirit and the Only Begotten in the flesh. For the little ones we'll just read the scriptures. Then we'll discuss the quotes with the older children. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." 1 John 4:9 "In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him." Matthew 16:16 "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." Elder James E. Talmage of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained: “That Child to be born of Mary was begotten of Elohim, the Eternal Father, not in violation of natural law but in accordance with a higher manifestation thereof; and the offspring from that association of supreme sanctity, celestial Sireship, and pure though mortal maternity, was of right to be called the ‘Son of the Highest.’ In His nature would be combined the powers of Godhood with the capacity and possibilities of mortality; and this through the ordinary operation of the fundamental law of heredity, declared of God, demonstrated by science, and admitted by philosophy, that living beings shall propagate—after their kind. The Child Jesus was to inherit the physical, mental, and spiritual traits, tendencies, and powers that characterized His parents—one immortal and glorified—God, the other human—woman.” (James E. Talmage, Jesus the Christ, 3rd ed. (1973), 81) President Ezra Taft Benson added his witness in these words: “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaims that Jesus Christ is the Son of God in the most literal sense. The body in which He performed His mission in the flesh was sired by that same Holy Being we worship as God, our Eternal Father. Jesus was not the son of Joseph, nor was He begotten by the Holy Ghost. He is the Son of the Eternal Father!” (Ezra Taft Benson, Come unto Christ (1983), 4) Creator - The Gospel of John proclaims that Christ is the Creator of all things: “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3) Mosiah 3:8 "And he shall be called Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of heaven and earth, the Creator of all things from the beginning; and his mother shall be called Mary." Hebrews 1: 1-2 "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds." Good Shepherd - Jesus gave this name to himself in John 10:14, "I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine." "A shepherd watches over his sheep. He keeps them safe in a place where nothing can harm them. He takes them to pastures where there is good food and water. The sheep know their shepherd’s voice and follow him. A good shepherd would give his life to protect his sheep from danger; he leads them to safety. Jesus is the Good Shepherd because He watches over us and shows us the way to go. We hear His voice as we study His words in the scriptures and as we follow His chosen leaders. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, has given His life for us, and He will lead us safely back to Heavenly Father. We are like His sheep when we listen to His voice, follow Him, and remember Him." Ann Jamison, Friend, Apr 2000, 37 Lesson prepared by Montserrat Wadsworth. Psalms 23:1- 6, " The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want...." Alma 5:38 "Behold, I say unto you, that the good shepherd doth call you; yea, and in his own name he doth call you, which is the name of Christ; and if ye will not hearken unto the voice of the good shepherd, to the name by which ye are called, behold, ye are not the sheep of the good shepherd." Lamb of God - John 1:29 "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." Isaiah 53:7 "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth." Mormon 9:6 "O then ye unbelieving, turn ye unto the Lord; cry mightily unto the Father in the name of Jesus, that perhaps ye may be found spotless, pure, fair, and white, having been cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, at that great and last day." Bread of Life - Here is another name Christ calls himself. After Jesus feed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread and two fish the people followed Him for the wrong reasons. They wanted Jesus to provide food for them again and again. Jesus tells them they need to seek for spiritual food which will give them eternal life. John 6:35, 48 "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst...I am that bread of life." Rock - "Experienced builders know that a structure cannot endure unless its foundation is strong. The words rock and stone, referring to the prime elements in ancient foundations, are used in the scriptures as metaphors signifying strength, steadiness, and durability. The prophets used these metaphors in a variety of ways, conveying an impression of the unwavering character of God as well as the need for spiritual solidarity in the foundation and structure of our own lives. Not only is Jesus a Rock, but his gospel also is likened to a rock, a sure foundation. The faithful disciple will build his life upon the foundation rock of the gospel of Jesus Christ, rather than upon the shifting sands of man’s wisdom. As the true God is a living God, so true disciples are lively in serving him." Robert J. Matthews, “I Have a Question,” Ensign, Jan. 1984, 51–52 2 Samuel 22:2 "And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;" Psalms 18:2 "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower." Helaman 5:12 "And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation...." Moses 7:53 "And the Lord said: Blessed is he through whose seed Messiah shall come; for he saith—I am Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of Heaven, which is broad as eternity; whoso cometh in at the gate and climbeth up by me shall never fall; wherefore, blessed are they of whom I have spoken, for they shall come forth with songs of everlasting joy." Light of the World - Another name Jesus gave for himself. "If we are to [be] an ensign to the nations and a light to the world, we must take on more of the luster of the life of Christ." Gordon B. Hinckley, “An Ensign to the Nations, a Light to the World,” Ensign, Nov 2003, 82 Psalms 27:1 " The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" John 8:12 "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the alight of the world: he that followeth me shall not bwalk in cdarkness, but shall have the light of life." Prince of Peace - Isaiah 9:6 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." There are actually four more names for Jesus in this verse. Can your children name them? Alpha & Omega - Read Alpha and Omega in the Bible Dictionary. Christ gave this name to himself. Revelations 1:8 "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty" 3 Nephi 9:18 "I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end." Doctrine & Covenants 19:1 "I am Alpha and Omega, Christ the Lord; yea, even I am he, the beginning and the end, the Redeemer of the world." Redeemer - "It is called the gospel of Jesus Christ because it is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that makes redemption and salvation possible. Through the Atonement all men, women, and children are unconditionally redeemed from physical death, and all will be redeemed from their own sins on the condition of accepting and obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ." Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Have We Not Reason to Rejoice?,” Ensign, Nov 2007, 18–21 Job 19:25 "For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:" Lesson prepared by Montserrat Wadsworth. Savior Luke 2:11 "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." 1 John 4:14 "And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world." King - Isaiah 43:15 "I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King." Hark the herald angels sing "Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled" Joyful, all ye nations rise Join the triumph of the skies With the angelic host proclaim: "Christ is born in Bethlehem" Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the newborn King!" Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of Righteousness!
