Nakshatras and Aim By YENBEEYES Date: 10.11.2007 Nakshatras can be related to Navamsa, which is the chart of the soul. Nakshatras can be related to the gunas, which represents qualities of energy. They can be related to four purposes of life. The first part has already been dealt with by me exhaustively in my article titles ‘Nakshatra and navamsa’. The second part Rahulji has already explained. In fact I have also written an article on this Guna aspect of Nakshatras. I shall also try to upload the same after I get necessary permission from the moderators. But the basic idea has already been conveyed by Rahulji very clearly. The third part which relates Nakshatras to the four aims or goals of life viz. Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. Hindu philosophy emphasizes that chatuvidha phala purushaarthas i.e. Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha are the four personal aims to be realized during the course of one’s life. The Dharma concept encompasses all aspects of our life. Artha implies wealth, prosperity, reputation, fame etc. Kama implies sensory and aesthetic fulfillment. Moksha is liberation and salvation. According Hindu Dharma one’s obligation is to practice Artha and Kama with Dharma to obtain Moksha. If members wants to know more about the purushaarthaas they can go to any Hindu website wherein tonnes of information and explanations are available. Hence to conclude that every individual’s life is revolving round the four Purushaarthhas. Nakshatras explicitly show the four aims of life. Each Nakshatra is characterized by one of the four aims. They are classified in direct and reverse orders. The direct order is Dharma-Artha-Kama-Moksha and the Reverse order is Moksha-Kama-ArthaDharma. Given below are the calculations.: First Nakshatra Ashwini is a Dharma Nakshatra, Bharani is an Artha Nakshatra, Krittika is a Kama Nakshatra and Rohini is a Moksha Nakshatra. Then the order gets reversed. 5 th Nakshatra Mrigasirsha is Moksha followed by Ardra – Kama, Punarvasu – Artha and Pushya – Dharma. Again the order is direct that is Aslesha is Dharma, Magha is Artha, PurvaPhalguni is Kama and UttaraPhalguni is Moksha. Again the order will get reversed. Hasta is Moksha, Chitra is Kama, Swathi is Artha and Vishaka is Dharma. Then the direct order begins. Anuradha is Dharma, Jyeshta is Artha, Moola is Kama and Purvashaada is Moksha. Thereafter we have to apply the reverse order – Uttarashaada is Moksha. Shravana must be Kama. But Shravana is actually Artha. That is to say we skip Kama here. Why? We all know that there is a system wherein the Nakshatras are actually 28 and not 27 which is inclusive of Abijit. Abhijit is located between Purvashaada and Shravana. Since this Nakshatra is far away fro the ecliptic, we are not taking this into our system. However if we take this Abhijit also into account then Abhijit will be Kama and Shravana will be Artha which will fit into our calculation system perfectly. Continuing with our reverse order, Dhansihta will be Dharma. Then the direct order will complete the system. Satabhishak will be Dharma, PurvaBhadrapada will be Artha, UttaraBhadrapada will be Kama and Revati will be Moksha. The table below gives the aims Nakshatra-wise: Goal Dharma Artha Kama Moksha

Ashwini Bharani Krittika Rohini

Pushya Punarvasu Ardra Mrigasirsha

Aslesha Magha PurvaPhalguni UttiraPhalguni

Nakshatras Visakha Anuradha Swati Jyeshta Chitra Mula Hasta Purvashada

Dhanishta Shravana Abhijit Uttirashada

Satabhishak PurvaBhadrapada UttaraBhadrapada Revati

Now if we analyse the Planets placed in various Nakshatras in a chart, it will indicate which aim of life is being given importance in the person’s life. Let us take an example horoscope:

Chart 01: Sri Satya Sai Baba (Puttabarthi) (Ma)

Ra Mo

Rasi-D-1 Ju

Ke Planets Lagna Sun Moon Mars Mercury Jupiter Venus Saturn Rahu Ketu

Su Sa (Me) Ve ASC Nakshatra Anuradha Anuradha Arudra Ashwini Anuradha Dhanishta Anuradha Anuradha Arudra PShada

Aim Dharma Dharma Kama Dharma Dharma Dharma Dharma Dharma Kama Moksha

Total: Dharma – 7; Kama – 2; Moksha – 1. Hence Dharma is the main Aim of Swamiji.

This way you can analyse the chart and find out the aims of each person.
