Ten years ago, July 7th, Awarded – by the Chief Police of Indonesia, General Widodo in the photo opp. with me, “Colonel” Joe Nugroho/Joe Jussac, Jr. – BEST ARTICLE of 1998 on INDONESIAN POLICE MATTERS – at the Indonesian “S.W.A.T.” (The Indonesian Mobile Brigade, the BRIMOB) HQ, Kepala Dua, BOGOR, West Java. The article appeared, two days in a row, May 12-13, 1998 in the Daily MEDIA INDONESIA (my personal copies no more available, yet, the libraries in the Daily and in the MABES POLRI or the Indonesian Police H.Q. Jakarta, may still keep them). The title of my article/opinion in the Daily was/is MENYOAL “PENCULIK MISTERIUS” (Freely translated, Probing the “Mysterious Abductors”). To tell the truth, the initial title in my final draft was “MENYOAL POLISI JELEK DAN PENCULIK MISTERIUS,” as I had been focusing on the continual “excessive use of force” by MANY cops in various parts of Indonesia – ENJOYED shooting down petty street bandits ON THE BACK!, or on the LEGs when the suspects were TRYING to get away. Hence, my BIG question was: we TAX PAYERS contributed our hard-earned money to the annual budget of the Indonesian Cops, among others, for the TRAININGS of the new recruits that included MARTIAL ARTS. I informed the readers and of course the Cops that in the ISA no such “barbarism” would be tolerated. Even in the 1990’s many US detective – prior to the use of semi-auto GLOCK 19, and the GKOCK 27 and/or GLOCK 26 as backup concealed carry – or CIDs purposely removed, by chopping the hammer of their service 357 or.38Special S&W or COLT off, so if they were compelled to shoot bandits, they (the Cops or Detective) could defend themselves in the Court that they did the shooting(s) in selfdefence, and that the HAMMERLESS guns of theirs had not been in “Condition One” – namely, in a single-action mode, supposedly that they ON PURPOSE have wanted to kill the crooks. Accordingly, this writer proposed that the MABES POLRI the Police HQ equip their CIDs more with “stunguns”. Does TASER ring a bell? Re the original title of mine, the then Executive Editor (my good, soft-spoken Christian ex-colleague) REWROTE it MENYOAL “PENCULIK MISTERIUS,” removing the words “POLISI JELEK” (I did write them between quotation marks, meaning that NOT ALL Cops are bad) or “BAD COPS” as had been stated by then The Chief of the POLDA METRO Jakarta (The REGIONAL Commander, 2-star general) that appeared in the cover of the then monthly GATRA magazine, quote “Saya Akan Sikat Polisi Jelek!” or ”I shall kick out the bad cops!”
For your information, I heard that the Big Boss’ dad was an ex-Brigadier General in the Police in North Sumatera; so, perhaps, this nice ex colleague of mine did not wish to offend his boss the OWNER of the Daily. Nevertheless, I appreciate very much that my ex colleague in the Daily made only a very small change in my final draft article. Parting Shot: this very photo will definitely make our friend in the US N.S.A., and in PENTAGON veeeeeeery pleased. Have fun guys. I am harmless.
