Introduction
Heritage of Haryana by Abhey Singh Grewal IDC, IIT Bombay
Gurukul Jhajjar was founded on outskirts of Jhajjar town by Mahashaya Bisembar Das, Swami Parmanand and Swami Brahmanand on May 16, 1915. It follows ancient tradition of Guru-Shishya in which teacher and student live together as equals. Curriculum-wise it teaches courses based on ancient Vedic knowledge and is affiliated to Maharishi Dayanand university, Rohtak. It is one of the many gurukuls started by Arya Samaj, to stress old knowledge and ways of obtaining that.

Gurukul Jhajjar has grown a lot, since its inception in 1915. Currently it houses big goshahlas, conduct classes till 12th standard, has its own Ayurvedic medicine factory, akharas for kushti and other sports. It however is not able to catch the attention of people anymore. Some of the Gurukuls have adapted to changing times and also provide education on modern science and language subjects.

The museum was started in 1959, by the then director of the Gurukul - Swami Omanand.

The institute is now home to a big museum housing coins of different periods and regions, terracota-work unearthed from various places in India, stone and sculpture work and other old collections done by people in personal capacity. The museum now houses a lot of valuable antiques. The most famous is the rare terracota figurine, with Valmiki’s Ramayana inscribed on it in Brahmi. The museum has become one of the biggest in Haryana in terms of the number of items. Haryana government in 2014, decided to convert it into a government museum, but after the government change in 2015, the plan was put on backseat.
