Job Index for Feb ’09 up by 5% Highlights of the report The Overall Job Index moved up by 5% from 738 in Jan ‘09 to 774 in Feb ‘09. 7 cities saw an increase in hiring activity, Chandigarh and Ahmedabad topped the charts Hiring activity went up in industries like Oil and Gas, Auto, Construction, Pharma and Insurance Greater demand for Sales and Business Development professionals and Production personnel Executive Summary Feb 2009: Hiring activity moved up by 5% as compared to Jan ‘09 February is usually a month of caution, as annual results approach and hiring gets impacted. Despite that the Naukri JobSpeak index for Feb ‘09 at 774 is 5% up from Jan ‘09, indicating an improved hiring scenario. The gain in the index is reflected in an improved job situation in cities like Delhi – NCR, Ahmedabad Chandigarh and Pune. Hiring activity went up in industries like Auto, Construction, Telecom and Insurance. There was a greater demand for Sales & Business Development professionals as well as Production personnel. The report compiles an index on job listings added to the site every month. The listings are representative of the jobs posted on the site by recruiters that are clients of Naukri.com. The team at Naukri.com successfully maps and derives trends to reflect the jobs available online. To calculate the index, job listings added to the site in July 2008 have been taken as a base of 1000. The February 2009 index is compared with July 2008. A summary of trends in February is presented in the Executive Summary section. The charts with the corresponding numbers have been collated in the annexure.

City wise Analysis: Out of the top 13 cities, 7 cities saw an increase in hiring activity in Feb ‘09 as compared to Jan ‘09. The index for Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Baroda and Jaipur moved up. There is a noticeable improvement in the hiring situation in Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. The index for Chandigarh and Ahmedabad moved up from 659 and 715 in January to 833 and 996 in Feb ‘09 up by 26% and 39% respectively. The job index for Delhi – NCR and Pune moved up by 9% and 4% respectively, as compared to Jan ’09. Slowdown in hiring continued in Mumbai witnessing a decline in hiring activity by 5% from Jan ‘09. Kolkata and Coimbatore witnessed a drop in the index declined by almost 11% in both the cities in Feb ‘09 as compared to Jan ‘09. Industry Analysis: Hiring in the Oil and Gas industry picked up in Feb ‘09 by 24%, the index moved to 910 as compared to 732 in Jan ’09. Maintaining stability for the past few months at an index level of 770, hiring in the Insurance industry picked up, the insurance index moved to 922, up 20% as compared to Jan ‘09 The Auto industry cheered up after the slump in the past months, the index moved up by 15% from 501 in Jan ’09 to 577 in Feb ’09.

The Pharma industry continued to see an upward trend in hiring and the job index for the industry moved up by 11% in Jan ‘09 Hiring scenario in the IT – Software and BPO remained stable, the index moved marginally by 1-3% vis a vis Jan ‘09.

Witnessing a sudden shift, the index for the education industry moved down by 16%, from 1112 in Jan ‘09 to 940 in Feb ‘09. The index for niche industries such as Legal, Security & Law Enforcement moved up to 2203, 1473 from 1281, 1018 respectively Functional Area / Department Analysis: Greater demand for Production, Sales and Business development professionals Sales and Business Development professionals continued to see an increase in hiring with the index moving up since Oct ’08, the index moved up by 12% from 849 in Jan ’09 to 953 in Feb ’09 Pharma and Biotech professionals continued to see an upward trend in hiring and moved up by 20% as compared to Jan ‘09. The index at 1318 hit an all time high. Banking and Insurance professionals saw an upward trend in hiring, the index moved up by 10% from 665 in Jan ‘09 to 737 in Feb ’09.

Job creation for functional roles such as Marketing and HR remained stable at the Jan ‘09 level. The demand for professionals in Hospitality saw a downward trend. The index moved down by 12% from 1046 in Jan ’09 to 925 in Feb ’09. Experience Bucket: Senior Management saw a push in hiring in Feb ‘09 The maximum jobs continued to be in the 4-7 years experience category. However it was the senior management that saw a push in hiring in Feb ’09. Senior Management hiring picked up, with jobs for 16+ years of experience moving up by 10% as compared with Jan ‘09. Hiring activity for the experience band of 13-16 years picked by 6% as compared with Jan ‘09 Fresher hiring and junior executive hiring remained stable at the Jan level.

Methodology Data for calculating the Index has been sourced from Naukri.com and is reflective of the job listings on the site. Jobs have been categorised by location, functional area, and industry. The index has been calculated across cities/ functional area- dept/ industry verticals. On the basis of job listings added to the site every month, the data shows an increase or decline in the jobs. To calculate the index, job listings added to the site in July 2008 have been taken on a base of 1000. The subsequent months have been indexed with data of July 2008. The report produced monthly shows hiring trends across industry sectors, geography and functional areas. More than 32500 clients use Naukri.com, leading to high reliability of the data. Naukri.com serviced over 24500 unique clients in H1 2008 Disclaimer The data is only representative of the listings on Naukri.com.
