Dear Reader, As you travel through this paper you will experience a multitude of different genres of writing. In coming up with the genres that I chosen to include in this piece I tried to think of as many different scenarios as I could, that varied greatly as well. In doing so, I hope to show you that no matter where life may take you, or what your personal view of writing may be, that mastering thinking strategies and rhetorical moves associated with good writing is important. It is amazing what can be accomplished, and what emotions can be elicited with good writing. I do not hold the idealistic point-of-view that all of my students will immediately turn into dream students just because I think I hold the best teaching strategies of all time. I know that no matter what there will always be students who have their minds set on doing as little work as possible, or no work at all. If they learn anything from me, however, I hope it is what the basis of this paper is: the power of good writing, no matter where you apply it. So, please enjoy the writing I have included in this piece, and remember that no matter where your dreams take you, writing can help you succeed.
Sincerely, Louise Schreiber

Billy, a senior in high school has is held after class by his English teacher after his tenth outburst during his expository writing class….
Billy, what do I need to do to get you to pay attention to me and stop disturbing your peers? I mean, I dunno. Work with me here, Billy. I’m trying but you need to meet me half way. You’re an adult; if this is just hopeless, let me know now. I just don’t see why I need to learn this. I mean, when will I ever write a five-paragraph essay, or a comparing and contrasting essay ever in my entire life? You know, you probably won’t. But the thinking and rhetorical moves I’m trying to teach you will apply for the rest of your life no matter where your dreams may take you. Yea, I doubt that… Well, either way you’re in my class, and the outbursts need to stop. All right.
Billy went about his day as is nothing had really happened. A teacher reprimanding him was all too familiar. He went to bed that night and dreamed about his future… Billy dreams he is taking the ACT before applying to the college of his choice.

Essay Section: 35 minutes Educators debate extending high school to five years because of increasing demands on students from employers and colleges to participate in extracurricular activities and community service in addition to having high grades. Some educators support extending high school to five years because they think students need more time to achieve all that is expected of them. Other educators do not support extending high school to five years because they think students would lose interest in school and attendance would drop in the fifth year. In your opinion, should high school be extended to five years?
In your essay, take a position on this question. You may write about either one of the two points of view given, or you may present a different point of view on this question. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Billy dreams his relationship with his current girlfriend is on the rocks. They can’t seem to get past trust issues and he has never been able to really convey his emotions orally. So, he writes her a poem.
Friends. Lovers. Others.
Their friendship was strong. Bond cemented over time. A new bond was formed… as they moved to the room for lovers. There were others in that room. Others that threatened our lovers’ strength. For in that room stood jealousy, trust, and love. The others fought. Collided and dominated in a storm of emotions. Our lovers, in the middle, grasped for one another. But a jealous wind sent them flying. They clung desperately to the walls. But trust had greased the sides…. So the obliteration continued. Where was love? When all hope seemed lost, a shout arose above the whirlwind. “I LOVE YOU!”

... The wind stopped. The walls vanished. And all that remained-were our lovers.

TRADE (Just lyrics… For the real experience read words along to “Tear” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The word pattern fits right along with the lyrics written by them. These lyrics are original though)
VERSE 1 I’ve got it all, I’ve seen the world. I’d give it you right now. Aint no questions asked. Bring me back to where I should be. I missed the world. I missed my time. Leavin’ now, gunna miss it all. Lived ten lives now all I want- is to start over again. I see your life I want to trade you. I missed my time.
CHORUS On and on again, missing all that could have been. The sun will rise, I know it will. But I’d like to change my view. In this craziness, I’d like to find new happiness. But at this time I’d like to know- Can I just trade with you? Keep it quiet if the answers no.
VERSE 2 Why complain when it’s what I wished for. Genie didn’t warn that wish- may not be right for you. Cant go back and change now. I missed my time.
BRIDGE Take to the sky, I’m getting high again. I’m numb this time.
OUTRO I see your life, I’ve made a new wish. But the genies gone. I’m stuck here now. I’ll make the best of it. Tell me if you want this. I’d trade with you, I want a new time.
