A s S m i t h neared t h e s i t e a h a l f h o z r l a t e r , around 1 0 o fc l o c k , he n o t i c e d a f a i n t column of smoke r i s i r l g from t h e a r e a . Hurrying on, he found t h e t e n t and i t s equipment had b ~ ~ r n et do t h e ground. The t e n t was s t i l l smoldering, and a p a i r o f l e a t h e r shoes and sone r e c o r d s were snaking. A hoasewife, who does n o t want h e r name' used, .had ,a f , r i g h t e n i n g experisncc +he morning of March 1 0 , 1969 when a beam of l i g h t f r o m . a n u n i d e n t i f i e d f l y i n g o b j e c t slowed t h e speed o f - h e r c a r Trom 50 miles j?er box t o l e s s than t e n . Looking l o r i t s source, she saw a clwrcoal gray d i s c w i t h a dome of t h e s a m c o l o r a t an a i t i t u d e estj-mated t o be 1000 t o 2000/ f e e t . The very b r ~ g h - tbeam of l i g h t was coming from the bottom of t h e o b j e c t , narrow a t i t s s c u r c e , b u t n e a r l y t h e width of t h e highway a s i t foeused on t h e road, . 3e had stop226 a t a m i l box about a mile west of Stover on Route 1 wliefi he observed a huge, o v a l - ~ 1 l a ~ i . d o b j e c t approaching from the west, a p p a r e ~ ~ t lf y o l l o w i n g the highway. It was gray i n c o l o r , with no v i s i b l e appurtenances o r ogenings except f o r a s l i g h t bulge a l o n g t h e bottom. I t was about 400 f e e t above the road, and he gxessed i t s l e n g t h t o 'ce 25 f e e t . Nr. Blxckmdn' f i r s t thocght was it might be a b a l l o o n a d v e r t i s i n g the S t a t e F a i r i n S2cialia, but when the o b j e c t appeared over t h e junction of Highways 5 2 and 135 and lowered t o withi n 50 f c e t of the road, i t w a s c l o s e enough t o M r . Blackman t h a t he was c c r t a i n it was not a balloon--or any o t h e r t y p e o f v e h i c l e he had c v c r secn. Farmers were b a l i n g hay i n f i e l d nearby and IvIr.
