UFO OBSERVED AT C W E RANGE I N MO. By Ted P h i l l i p s , Jr. A t 7 am Feb. 14, 1968, an o b j e c t of unknown o r i g i n was observed on t h e ground i n a very rugged a r e a of s o u t h - c e n t r a l Missouri. The following r e p o r t i s taken from a taped interview with t h e w r i t e r on Feb. 17, and a copy has been s e n t t o D r . J. Allen m e k , A i r Force S c i e n t i f i c Consultant on UFO's. It was 7 em and t h e sky w a s q u i t e c l e a r and b r i g h t ; no stars were v i s i b l e . The observer w a s walking towards a l a r g e barn l o c a t e d some 100 f e e t e a s t of his house, when he noticed one of h i s cows looking out i n t o a f i e l d behind t h e barn. H e then observed t h e UFO on t h e ground some 335 f e e t from h:m. A t t h i s p o i n t he uas l ~ o E r ! through s e v e r a l s c a t t e r e d t r e e s . He moved t o t h e ~ o r t h e a s tcorner of t h e b m andP up t o t h i s p o i n t , he thought t h e o b j e c t w a s a parachute. On moving a few f e e t f u r t h e r , he s a w s e v e r a l s m a l l " o b j e c t s " moving under t h e UFO which was 285 f e e t from h i m . The observer s a i d t h e " c b j e c t s " r e r e movlr? q d t e r e p i d l y ; t h e y seemed t o have arms, a l s o moving a t a high r a t e of speed. It was t h e observer's opinion t h e s e s m a l l o b j e c t s were m t human. They seemed t o b e about t h e same c o l o r as t h e UFO, w i t h n o v i s i b l e neck, head, o r l e g s ; however, he was some d i s t a n c e may and t h e o b j e c t s seemed t o be about two and a h a l f f e e t tall. The UFO w a s s e t t i n g on a sheft only s l i g h t l y t a l l e r than t h e o b j e c t s . The observer s t a r t e d through t h e f i r s t fence, a t this p o i n t 210 f e e t from t h e UFO t h e mall o b j e c t s s t a r t e d moving around behind t h e s h a f t and e n t e r i n g it on t h e s i d e may f r o m him. "As I came through t h e f i r s t gate, I picked up two rocks, p r e t t y good s i z e , one of them w a s . I g o t up t h e r e t o about 30 f e e t *om it and it was s e t t i n g t h e r e , kind of rocking s l i g h t l y . The wind was blowing o u t of t h e e a s t , and I thought, 'Boy, h e r e goes, I'm going t o knock a h o l e i n t h a t t h i n g and s e e what t h e h e l l it is!' The "thing" s e n t o f f a bean aboct t h e s i z e of a c a r ' s h e a d l i g h t . Frightened, they sought o u t a K i f i g County deputy s h e r i f f , and brought him t o t h e gravel p i t . It had vanished when t h e y returned. Biit t h e water i n t h e grm-el pik, & o u t 50 feet f r o m edge t o edge, w a s covered w i t h two inches of i c e . Yet o t h e r bodies of water n e a r t h e pond had no i c e i n them. lest this t a l e sound l i k e a l a r k , i n s t e a d of a f l y i n g saucer r e p o r t , it i s supported by King County s h e r i f f ' s deputy Don Holke, whom t h e boys had summoned. Holke s a i d t h e i c e s t i l l waa t h i c k enough t o walk on Sunday afternoon. And he added another b r i e f thought: "The i c e w a s c l e a r , and a funny thing; it had no water on t o p of it although it w a s r a i n i n g all day."

Guest -.from Other Worlds? The recorded o b s e r v a t i o n s 1.~i.11 s e r v e t o check hypotheses. These hypothese should n o t , i n my opinion,, a t t e m p t , -to e x p l a i n t h e n a t u r e of UFOs i n terms of familiar phenomena. Judging by
o t h e r s u r p r i s e s , n a t u r e has some i n s t o r e h e r e t o o , and we must b e r e a d y f o r p e r haps a r a d i c a l "reassessment o f v a l u e s . " The h y p o t h e s i s t h a t UFO8 o r i g i n a t e i n o t h e r worlds, t h a t t h e y a r e f l y i n g c r a f t from p l a n e t s o t h e r t h a n Earth, m e r i t s t h e most s e r i o u s examination. Observations show t h a t UFOs behave " s e n s i b l y . " I n a group formation f l i g h t t h e y maint a i n a p a t t e r n . They a r e most o f t e n s p o t t e d o v e r a i r f i e l d s , atomic s t a t i o n s and o t h e r very new e n g i n e e r i n g i n s t a l l a t i o n s . On enc c u n t e r i n g a i r c r a f t t h e y always maneuver s o a s t o avoid d i r e c t c o n t a c t . A c o n s i d e r a b l e l i s t of t h e s e seemingly i n t e l l i g e n t a c t i o n s g i v e t h e i m p r e s s i o n t h a t UFO8 a r e i n v e s t i gaking, perhaps even r e c o n n o i t e r i n g . C u r i o a s l y enough, t h e number o f UFOs o b s e r v a t i o n s i n c r e a s e s as Mars approaches t h e e a r t h . Is t h a t p u r e c o i n c i d e n c e ? Some people t h i n k t h a t UFOs have appeared I n t h e Earzh's atmosphere o n l y d u r i n g t h e p a s t two decades. T h i s is not t h e c a s e . The UFO phenomenon has been observed throughout t h e h i s t o r y o f mankind, t h e r e a r e medieval and a n c i e n t r e p o r t s s t r i k i n g l y s i m i l a r t o o u r s . Among t h e e a r l i e r UFO r e p o r t s , a s an example, may b e t h e well-documented o b s e r v a t i o n s o f a l a r g e s a u c e r i n 1882 a d a " p r o c e s s i o n o f b o l i d e s " i n 1913. These r e p o r t s s t i l l aw a i t investigation. The mosz remarkable UFO phenomenon i s t h e famous "Tungusky m e t e o r i t e . " I n r e c e n t y e a r s S o v i e t s c i e n t i s t s have e s t a b l i s h e d t h a t t h e Tu~?guskye x p l o s i o n had e v e r y parameter o f an a i r n u c l e a r b l a s t . The USSR Academy o f S c i ences Reports (volume 172, Nos. 4 and 5, 1967) have s t u d i e s by Alexei Zolotov t o prove t h a t t h e Tungusky body could n o t b e a m e t e o r i t e o r a comet. I n t h e Sumner o f 1967 t h e J o i n t I n s t i t u t e of Nuclear Research a t Dubna p u b l i s h e d a s t u d y by Vladimir Mekhedov, who concludes t h a t t h e Tungusky b l a s t l e f t c o n s i d e r a b l e r e s i d u a l r a d i o a c t i v i t y , F i n a l l y , as r e c e n t l y as 1966, a f t e r a n a l y z i n g t h e sum t o t a l o f o b s e r v a t i o n s on t h e Tungusky body's f l i g h t , t h i s w r i t e r showed t h a t b e f o r e t h e b l a s t t h e Tungusky body d e s c r i b e d i n t h e atmosphere a tremendous arc o f about 375 m i l e s i n e x t e n t ( i n azimuth), t h a t i s , c a r r i e d o u t a manuever. A l l t h e s e new r e s u l t s w a r r a n t t h e conclus i o n t h a t t h e Tungusky body seems t o have been an a r t i f i c i a l f l y i n g c r a f t from a n o t h e r p l a n e t . Sould t h i s b e f i n a l l y confirmed by i n v e s t i g a t i o n s now i n p r o g r e s s , t h e s i g n i f i c a n c e o f t h e Tungusky d i a s t e r would b e i n e s t i m a b l e . But t h i s , i n c i d e n t a l l y , w i l l pose new problems, If we a r e indeed b e i n g s t u d i e d by c r e a t u r e s from o t h e r p l a n e t s , what i s t h e i r purpose? Why a r e t h e y s o s t u i o u s l y a v o i d i n g any d i r e c t c o n t a c t ? Is their uns o c i a b i l i t y t h e r e s u l t of s o high a l e v e l o f development t h a t t h e y s t u d y us from t h a t " h e i g h t " j u s t as we l o o k upon and s t u d y a n t s ? O r i s t h e r e s t i l l t h e p o s s i b i l i t y of common understanding s i n c e we a r e born i n t h e same Universe and obey t h e same laws o f nature? Yes, t h e r e a r e many q u e s t i o n s , b u t a l l a r e i n t h e d i s t a n t f b t u r e . Our study o f UFOs may l e a d t o q u i t e d i f f e r e n t conclus i o n s and p r e s e n t mankind w i t h q ~ j i t ed i f f e r e n t problems.
