EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Fragments exhibition by Blake is about saving lives. Blake’s series of twenty hauntingly beautiful figurative bronze sculptures are being sold to benefit The No More Landmines Trust (registered UK charity No. 1110770), the UK partner of the global Adopt-a-Minefield campaign. The London Fragments exhibition at 5 Pall Mall from November 1st to 17th 2007 offers a wonderful opportunity for companies to empower their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy with the vast majority of the sales proceeds going directly to The No More Landmines Trust for landmine removal throughout the world. Corporate art buyers benefit from an original bronze sculpture at an exceptional price, as well as branding opportunities online and at the Fragments show in November, and a documented CSR initiative. The objective of the Fragments exhibition is to sell one hundred sculptures to raise One Million Two Hundred Thousand Pounds directly for The No More Landmines Trust to fund world-wide landmine clearance activities. Prices for sculptures start at £ 12,000. Motive presents Blake’s one-man exhibition that uses bronze sculpture to raise awareness of how landmines are destroying lives and restricting development in developing countries. Guest Celebrity speakers will participate at the evening events with daily tours of school children and public awareness raising activities conducted by The No More Landmines Trust throughout the 17 day show. The Fragments exhibition offers companies the opportunity to support the arts and participate in a great cause with documented results. Corporations purchasing a sculpture will receive media attention for their participation as well as branding opportunities leading up to and during the exhibition. They can request a closed viewing for their clients at the November show and will enjoy a web presence on the Motive website with a link to their CSR web page. After the exhibition, field reports will be issued by The No More Landmines Trust outlining specific clearance details with accompanying documentation supporting how their participation has made a real difference in the lives of individuals and communities. Motive is pleased to provide a sculpture placement service for corporations that wish to donate the sculpture to a school or public art gallery. Brando Communications Ltd. of 57 Jamestown Road, London NW1 7DB, is directing the promotion of the Fragments exhibition and the public relations campaign to secure editorial commentary and media coverage. INTRODUCTION TO THE FRAGMENTS EXHIBITION The Fragments collection is a series of ¼ life size figurative bronze sculptures inspired by remnants of war. These eroded and injured figures are a comment on our society and represent the suffering in many post conflict countries. Each of Blake’s sculptures is cast in a limited edition consisting of twelve copies. The London Fragments exhibition will have an inventory of one hundred original Fragment sculptures, made up of twenty different sculptural works with five copies of each work available for sale. A “Certificate of Authenticity” will be provided in the name of the client indicating that the work is the original creation of the artist, the edition number and the title. All property rights, title and interest of the artist are consigned to the client. All copyrights are non transferable and remain the sole property of the artist. A foundry certificate is provided for each piece. Venturi Arte, a family operated foundry located in Bologna, Italy, is one of the most technically advanced foundries in Europe. BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST

Blake was born in 1956 in northern Canada. His artistic life began during the 1970s in the University of Alberta, Western Canada, amid the artistic explosion that occurred at the end of the modern art era. Under the influence of his University professor, who was a student of Anthony Caro, Blake began creating abstract steel sculptures which concentrated on spatial relationships, volume and positive and negative form – as with many artists working during this period his art was also affected by the leading art critic Clement Greenberg. Towards the end of Blake’s university life, he started to move away from the abstract trend and focused on creating figurative sculpture, a direction with which the university could not assist him. In his search for formal training in figurative sculpture, Blake moved to Paris where he studied for 4 years. The city of Paris became a creative inspiration for him and the works of Houdon, Rodin, and Carpeaux all became important artistic influences. Once Blake had begun his career as a professional artist, his work took on a more decorative style in order to satisfy the commercial market, and he created a series of sculptures based on dance, women, and mythology. In later work, Blake has gravitated back towards political commentary that influenced his early lithograph prints inspired by censorship in China, and the murder of Aldo Moro in Italy. In 1989, Blake produced one of his first politically inspired sculptures, contrasting the fall of the Berlin wall with the silencing of the pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square, China.

Other influences in Blake’s artistic development were his experiences in Italy, Greece, and Turkey. During his visits there, he became aware of the complex artistic treatments of the human figure throughout history, and in particular the fragmented sculptures from the ancient Greek and Roman periods, which, through the course of history, had been damaged by the continuous cycle of wars. These archaeological remains physically illustrated the reality of war to Blake - the lack of glory in destruction, and the surviving nature of man. Blake’s fragmented work not only reached into antiquity but was to draw on his period of teaching in Vietnam: In November 2003, at the invitation of the Hanoi Fine Arts University Vietnam, Blake became the first westerner to teach part of the official curriculum at the University since 1945. During this time, Blake travelled throughout Vietnam to Cambodia and witnessed the continuing effects of a war that ended over 25 years before. “What touched me was that they were still living the war I had known as a child on television, so far removed from me, yet documented in colour on the nightly news. These images had lived on somewhere in my mind and here was the evidence that this war was still taking causalities”. The Fragment series, based on victims of war, was further inspired by Blake’s interest in the glorification of war through sculptural memorials. The intense daily media coverage of the war in Canada and the USA, with its powerful imagery of military action began to deeply affect him. Blake’s family also became involved some years later when the family business, the airline “Wardair Canada”, helped in the Canadian Government rehabilitation program by carrying up to 32,000 refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia to Canada. Blake’s connection to Vietnam also continues to this day with his involvement in the Witness Collection - an outstanding collection of contemporary Vietnamese fine art, which illustrates both changes in life and the evolution of society in Vietnam over the past 80 years. The organisation is also involved in other aspects of the arts in Vietnam: research and education, arts conservation, arts development and cultural exchanges. “My original search for beauty is an adventure that has led finally to the need for my artwork to make a statement beyond beauty. My goal is to create sculptures that provoke and encourage the interrogation of society. My art is humanistic, representational and investigative.” Blake currently resides in the Principality of Monaco where his first public sculpture was installed in 1994. This monumental work, consisting of three life size figures, was the first of five sculptures on permanent public display. Blake’s work has since been exhibited in numerous cities across Canada, France, Germany, and the United States. www.blake.at
