We use the term "morphing" to describe the combination of generalized image warping with a cross-dissolve between image elements. The term is derived from "image metamorphosis“.
Most often it is used to depict one person turning into another through some magical or technological means or as part of a fantasy or surreal sequence.
clever cuts. stop-motion animation. Cross-fading.
Dissolve using fully analogue equipment.

Optical - flow technology.
In the simplest terms optical flow tracks every pixel in one frame to the next frame. The output is a series of vectors for every pixel in the shot. From these vectors and some analysis one can do an advanced image processing to find shapes and objects in the scene. Optical flow started as a tool for retiming shots without producing strobing, and today it is used for tracking, 3D reconstruction, motion blur, auto roto, and dirt removal.
Tom Brigham of the New York Institute of Technology deserves credit for introducing the concept of morph. Industrial Light and Magic took the idea to a new level of quality in several feature films.
