Just like Mr Li love his mother so much that he became unmanageable after his mother passed away. We should not forget our traditions and customs though we may live in a modern world In the story, Mr Li’s family is practising a modern way of living. For example, Helen invited her friends for tea, which is a modern way of socializing. They also use English as a medium of communication. Ying is also not familiar with the traditions and customs of preparing the altar. Ah Ma questioned her “Do you even know how to speak to your grandfather the right way? Afterwards, what candles do you light, what wine do you offer? Do you know?”. These conversations show that Ah Ma doubted that she know how to prepare the altar for her late grandfather.
