We must respect the elders We must respect the elders. The proof is when Ying was arguing over some joss sticks with Ah Ma and Mr Li was mad when Ying whispered to him that "She just won't hurry Baba, always has to do just what she wants!' because of that he thought that children this day have no respect for the elders.
We should appreciate our family members especially our parents while they are still alive We have to appreciate our parents because they will not be with us forever. We should appreciate them while we still have the chance. In the story, Mr Li doesn't take his time listening to his mother's stories about his childhood memories but then when his mother is about to die he wanted to ask many question about his past.
We must care and love our parents We must care about our parents. The proof is when Mr Li came home from work and brought a binocular for his mother,so that he hope that his mother can see far and clear. We must love our parents with our whole heart. Just like Mr Li love his mother so much that he became unmanageable after his mother passed away. We should not forget our traditions and customs though we may live in a modern world In the story, Mr Li’s family is practising a modern way of living. For example, Helen invited her friends for tea, which is a modern way of socializing. They also use English as a medium of communication. Ying is also not familiar with the traditions and customs of preparing the altar. Ah Ma questioned her “Do you even know how to speak to your grandfather the right way? Afterwards, what candles do you light, what wine do you offer? Do you know?”. These conversations show that Ah Ma doubted that she know how to prepare the altar for her late grandfather.
