woman sexually abused and a young man on his cycle ready for a world trip. Characters distant and yet so near. Situations on stage but so real. The Cyclist and Silence! The Court is in Session, the translated versions of plays written by the famous Marathi playwright Vijay Tendulkar are not only stories narrating circumstances of the protagonists but also give an insight into the psychology and functioning of Indian society through different layers. Version One dot Oh, (VODO), a Bangalore based theatre group, which began its journey in 2004, presents both the plays, which are adaptations of Tendulkar’s original Marathi pieces called Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe (Silence! The Court is in Session) and Safar/Cyclewallah (The Cyclist). Priya Adarkar and

Balwant Bhaneja respectively translated these plays into English. As a tribute to Vijay Tendulkar and his timeless creation, the two plays would be staged on October 30 and October 31 at Alliance Francaise De Bangalore. “For us Vijay Tendulkar represents a very strong influence in terms of his brilliance in writing, the social statements which he makes, the nuance interpretations he laces situations with,” says Vikram Rai, who heads the production house. Tendulkar’s strong writing style and depiction of situations strongly appeal to the young theatre audience because of its relevance even in the present day. Silence! The Court is in Session; set at the backdrop of a small town in the 1970s is a drama within a drama. It tells the tale of Benare, a sexually exploited, unmarried woman, who has been the victim of the double standards prevalent in society.
She is chosen as the lead for a community play and the narrative revolves around how she relates herself to the part she plays - her emotions and experiences are portrayed in a subtle tone giving the audience a social message, as they empathise with her plight. On the other hand, The Cyclist describes the geographical, psychological and historical perspective attached to the journey of a cyclist. A dark comedy, it brings out the eternal desire of the human heart to break free. The cycle, used as a metaphysical symbol brings forward the dreams and apprehensions not only of the character but also of an entire generation. However, Kishore Acharya, the director for ‘Silence! The Court is in Session,’ feels that it is both easy and difficult to enact the translations of Tendulkar’s plays. “It a very interesting mix of easy and very difficult actually. Easy because the

Difficult because Tendulkar is such an intelligent writer that there will be so many layers to everything he writes. You need to really work on the
sub-text of the scripts”, says Acharya”. Whether easy or not, VODO is ready to take Bangaloreans this weekend, on a trip to stark reality through a lucid, humorous narrative in true Vijay Tendulkar style.
