WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

Will the bird on the high-voltage wire be shocked?

WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

Since current flow is necessary for electric shock, the bird is quite safe unless it simultaneously touches another wire with a different voltage.

I = (V1 – V2) / R

Electric current flow is proportional to voltage difference according to Ohm’s law, and both the bird’s feet are at the same voltage.

WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

The helicopter make sure it doesn’t touch neighboring wires which are of different voltage.

Maintenance on a high voltage transmission lines is sometimes done with voltage “live” by working from a platform on a helicopter, sitting on the metal platform!

WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

For example: Earth Leakage Circuit Interrupter and Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter

They are exactly the same thing, only different terms are used in different countries.

In Britain people have “earth” and in North America they have “ground”.

WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

Grounded Conductor – A system of circuit conductor that is intentionally grounded.

Grounded – Connected to earth or to some conducting body that serves in place of the earth

Ground – A conducting connection, whether intentional or accidental, between an electrical circuit or equipment and the earth or to some conducting body that serves in place of the earth.

TERMINOLGY

WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

Grounding Electrode Conductor – The conductor used to connect grounding electrode(s) to the equipment grounding conductor, to the grounded conductor, or to both, at the service, at each building or structure where supplied by a feeder(s) or branch circuit(s), or at the source of a separately derived system.

Grounded Electrode - A device that establishes an electrical connection to the earth.

Grounding Conductor – A conductor used to connect equipment or the grounded circuit of a wiring system to grounding electrode or electrodes.

TERMINOLGY

7

PROFESSIONAL REGULATION COMMISSION Board of Electrical Engineering

WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

Solidly Grounded – Connected to ground without inserting any resistor or impedance device.

Effectively Grounded – Intentionally connected to earth through a ground connection or connections of sufficiently low impedance and having sufficient current-carrying capacity to prevent the buildup of voltages that may result in undue hazards to connected equipment or to persons.

TERMINOLGY

WHY GROUNDING IS USED!!!

GFCI – A device intended for the protection of personnel that functions to deenergize a circuit or portion thereof within an established period of time when a current to ground exceeds the values established for a device.

Equipment Grounding Conductor – The conductor used to connect the non-carrying metal parts of equipment, raceways, and the other enclosures to the system grounded conductor, the grounding electrode conductor, or both, at the service equipment or at the source of a separately derived system.

Then the live wire touches the grounded case then the circuit is effectively shorted and fuse will immediately blow. When the fuse is blown then the dangerous voltage are eliminated.

When all the metallic parts of electrical equipments are grounded then if the insulation inside the equipment fails there are no dangerous voltages present in the equipment case.

The main reason why grounding is used in electrical distribution network is safety.

2. Facilitate overcurrent device operation by establishing an effective ground-fault current path for the ground-fault current.
