Lesson Plan in Physics HEAT TRANSFER

I.

Objectives (1) Explain how heat is transferred through conduction, convection, and radiation.

II. Subject Matter A. Topic (1) Heat transfer B. Concepts (1) Heat is defined in physics as the transfer of thermal energy across a well-defined boundary around a thermodynamic system. (2) The fundamental modes of heat transfer are conduction, convection and radiation. (3) Conduction or diffusion is the transfer of energy between objects that are in physical contact. (4) Convection is the transfer of energy between an object and its environment, due to fluid motion. (5) Radiation is the transfer of energy to or from a body by means of the emission or absorption of electromagnetic radiation C. Skills (1) Observing (2) Reasoning D. Values (1) Recognizes the effect, importance and application of heat transfer in daily lives. E. Strategies (1) Guided discussion (2) Technology Integration – Video Simulation F. Materials (1) Video simulations G. References th (1) Paul Hewitt, Conceptual Physics, 9 Edition, (Singapore: Pearson Education (Asia) PTE Ltd., 2002) th (2) John D. Cutnell and Kenneth W. Johnson, Physics, 6 Edition, (John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2004)

III. Learning Activities A. Engaging the Students Task: Let the students to shake hands with their seatmates. Ask them how they feel. Elicit answers from them. B. Lesson Proper Questions to be answered. 1. What is heat? 2. What is heat transfer? 3. What are the means of transferring heat? 4. What is conduction? Can you give examples? 5. What is convection? What is convection current? 6. What is radiation? Can you cite an application? The strategy is emphasized on this part of the lesson. Video simulations are provided for better understanding of the differences in the modes of heat transfer. C. Evaluation Essay. Explain how heat is transferred in the three ways. Cite an example in each.
