A Cancer Diagnosis

Program Description: This program is for people diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers who are focused on optimal recovery after a diagnosis of cancer and subsequent cancer treatment. This unique event will allow attendees breakout into discussion groups in small conference rooms to discuss a specific topic with speakers considered expert in their field of practice. Each speaker will speak briefly and time will be allowed for questions and discussion between the speaker and attendees. Each of the 3 sessions will last 45 minutes and attendees may choose to participate in sessions that are of interest to them. Breakout Topics and Speakers Topic 1: Is Cancer in the Genes? Am I at Risk?

Topic 4: Post Treatment Challenges of Chemotherapy Treatment

Duane Superneau, MD, Geneticist, Genetic Services of Louisiana, will discuss the what, when, where, why and how of hereditary cancers and the benefits that genetic counseling can provide to patients and family members concerned about their risk for cancer development or who want to make choices to reduce their cancer risk.

Jack Saux, MD, Hematology Oncology Specialists will discuss side effects such as neuropathy, joint aches and memory changes, that are often associated with commonly used chemotherapeutic agents. Potential prevention and management options will also be discussed.

Topic 2: Waiting For the Other Shoe To Drop Jane Hextal, BSN, Certified Psychiatry Nurse and breast cancer survivor, will discuss adjusting to life after a cancer diagnosis and effective means of dealing with the fear of cancer recurrence.

Topic 3: Can We Talk? About Pain and Symptom Management Jack McNulty, MD, Palliative Care Specialist, Medical Director, Hospice of St. Tammany, will discuss how cancer and treatment can cause a myriad of symptoms that negatively impact quality of life. Pain and other symptoms can be well controlled, learn about the many options available.

Topic 5: Defining Methods to Cope with the Physical and Emotional Changes with Cancer Many tasks face cancer survivors and their loved ones as they adapt to changes a cancer diagnosis brings from the time of diagnosis, through treatment and into survivorship. Mark Cheramie, LCSW, Clinical Social Worker, will discuss the cancer experience as it extends over time and though specific stages, coping with the physical and emotional changes associated with cancer and cancer treatment, the effects of a cancer diagnosis on self-esteem, and grief/loss issues.

the STPH Cancer Resource Center, will discuss the underlying causes, risk factors, symptoms, and frequency of fatigue. An Occupational Therapist with the STPH Outpatient Rehabilitation Department will be available to review energy conservation techniques and other management options.

Topic 7: Treatment and Post Treatment Challenges of Radiation Treatment Dr. Charles Wood, Radiation Oncologist, MBPCC, will discuss short and long term side effects of radiation treatment, such as skin changes, fatigue and dry mouth. Potential prevention and management options will also be discussed.
