Meriwether Lewis Elementary School Weekly Letter 503 916 6360 - http://lewiselementary.org Principal Notes From Mr. Lauer Dear Families, Arts Opportunity for Lewis I am pleased to announce that Lewis will be taking part in an arts opportunity provided by RACC, The Regional Arts and Culture Council. This program is called The Right Brain Initiative and it is a partnership designed to enrich teaching and learning through the integration of the arts, particularly in the area of literacy. Last year, eight PPS schools participated, engaging community artists of all disciplines to meet school learning goals and the needs of their students.  To support their work, the Initiative assigns an Arts Integration Facilitator to assist with the development of ideas, planning, and implementation, all done in collaboration with artists chosen by our school. We are looking forward to taking advantage of this program and will share more information as we begin our work in this area. Lewis Email List I wanted to remind our families that we have established a new email list to keep families informed of news and events at Lewis. You can subscribe to our list by visiting this page: http://lewiselementary.org/email-list/ Sincerely, Mr. Lauer Yoga Club - Stretch, Strengthen, Breathe, and Relax: Yoga is a great activity for children. The movements are helpful for growing minds and bodies. My goal for yoga club is to help children be more physically active and aware, learn to respect and care for their bodies and to learn that movement relaxation and breathing can be fun! The Fall session is for 3-5 grade, K-2 will be held in the spring (TBA). Yoga club is from 8:00-8:40 a.m., Thursday mornings in the gym, beginning October 22nd and will run for 10 weeks.  Please sign up in the office, while a donation of $5 is appreciated, no fee is required to take part. Any questions can be directed to Kathy Bartlett, [email protected] or 503-775-4842. You will receive more information after registering your child. Lewis Green Team Please join us Tuesday, October 20th from 8:45-9:45 a.m. in the school library for the first Green Team meeting of the year. Over the last few years Lewis has made many steps towards reducing its environmental impact. Interested in getting involved in the school-wide recycling, the reused paper pads, or the 3rd Grade Compost and Recycling Team please come. Everyone is welcome! Cob Bench Project All Lewis students have been participating in our cob bench project and the bench is beginning to take shape. Our natural builder, James Thomson, will be doing the finishing work in the next few weeks. We would like to thank all of our parent and community volunteers who helped to make this event possible. Lewis Community Dinner: Mark your calendar for the first Lewis Community Dinner of the season.  This month’s meal will take place on Friday October 23rd at 6:00 and will feature loads of seasonal food from our school garden. There is a

October 14, 2009 suggested donation of ten dollars per family. Please mark the date and let’s gather around the table to share a meal! PTA Clothes Closet The PTA Clothes Closet is looking for donation of Jeans for students in need.  They need jeans for grades Kindergarten through 4th grade. Please bring any items you would like to donate to the Lewis School office, and the PTA will send them to the Clothes Closet. Thank you.   Safeway Receipts Thank you to everyone that brought in their Safeway Receipts.  The deadline has passed, but we earned OVER $590.00 from the everyday shopping that you do.  WOW!! You can continue to help us raise money by registering your Safeway Club Card.  Pick up an application at any Safeway or from the Lewis School Office, and designate Lewis School as your group.  We do need your Safeway Club Card number on the form, so if you do not have it (you usually use your phone number when you shop) please call Safeway at 1-877-Safeway.  Drop your forms off in the school office. Chess Club News Chess Club has started!  We have 62 players from 1st through 5th grade!  We meet every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8am in the library.  All beginning players must attend this week, otherwise our lessons will be too far along for them to join.   Meanwhile, our intermediate and advance players are starting a tournament to determine our 12 players for the Lewis Chess Team that will compete in February at the Regional Tournament. Leslie Lauretti/TAG News TAG Nominations If you would like to nominate your child for TAG, please pick up the forms in the office. The nomination deadline is November 23rd. If you have any questions about the process, please email me at [email protected] or come talk to me in Room 15. Parent TAG Meeting Lewis TAG parents are invited to attend our TAG Parent Meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held at Cleveland High School. Fall Fundraiser - Innisbrook - Thank you to families who have already ordered something from Innisbrook.  We are extending the deadline for fundraiser to October 21st, because we have not reached our goal of $3000.  We are currently $1000 short of our goal.  If every student ordered one more item from the catalog we would meet our goal. Lewis Eats Out - Thanks for helping us reach our fundraising goals by getting a take-n-bake pizza from Papa Murphy's last night.   We appreciate the support! Barnes and Noble - All families are receiving 2 postcards for the Barnes and Noble event this weekend.  Please give these out to friends and family.  The Barnes and Noble event is happening this weekend, October 17th and 18th between 12-5pm.  We have tons of free fun events for kids and a free raffle, so stop by and while you are there get a book or two.   We will have teacher wish lists on posted at the event and even music and food purchased from Barnes and Noble will help raise money for Lewis if you mention us.  It is really important not to forget to mention Lewis or bring your voucher or the money won't get assigned to us. See the full list of activities for Barnes and Noble at us. lewisevents.org.

Late Opening Wed. October 21, 2009 School will begin at 10:40 am
