Remember your VALUES- and stick to em! Goals should be S.M.A.R.T. - Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time bound. Share your goals with your goal with your scholars and the other mentors who work with your scholars, and have them share their goals with you. Lean on the resources available to you; staff, other mentors and your relationship with your scholars are all invaluable resources.

Study Strategies

A. Have a conference with your scholar SHARE your GOALS- reestablish your relationship and ask how you can help them. B. Communicate with your scholars in and out of center (i.e. e-mail them) C. Write session summaries (quick notes) each night to their parents about their behavior. D. Use your centers incentive and checks system.

A. Communicate clear Academic and behavior goals for the mentoring session at the beginning of each session. B. Ask scholars how they learn best and incorporate little bits of it into the lesson. C. Make time each session to incorporate fun-time with your scholars. D. team up with other group and have competitions.

A. Look at your scholar’s planner for homework assignments. B. Ask scholars if they need help with any homework related to your mentoring subject and help them (if possible). C. Challenge scholars to complete their hw before mentoring and reward them for doing so with a scholar chip.

A. Ask scholars if they reviewed their notes today (or everyday this week) B. Ask if you can offer help tutoring scholars in a particular subject during mentoring. C. Ask scholars to bring graded quizzes & tests to center and correct them with you or an achievement coach, staff person, parent, etc…

A. Ask scholars if they study their notes daily for 15 minutes. B. Quiz them on their notes before community meeting or for 5-10 minutes during mentoring. C. Ask a scholar if they have formed a study group or study buddy with classmates. (find out who)

There are a million ways to success. It’s up to us all to find what works.
