Delegation Definition of Delegation: -Is the transfer of responsibility for the performance of an activity from one individual to another while retaining accountability for the out come. Reasons for delegation: 1- Delegation save time 2- It maximizes the use of the talents of staff. 3- Providing motivation and commitment. 4- Reduce managerial costs. The components of delegation: 1- The delegator. 2- The delegatee. 3- The supervision.

Principles of delegation: 1- Know your self and your team members well. 2- Assess strengths, weakness, job descriptions, the situation, and the skills of your self and the team members. 3- Understand the practice act, practice limitations. 4- Know the job requirement. 5- Keep communication clear, complete and constant. 6-Evaluation (Feed back).

Conditions that facilitate delegation: 1- First, the managers need to understand the concept of delegation. 2- The following of delegation principles. 3- They need to overcome feeling of loss of prestige by develop apositive atmosphere. 4-They need to have effective communication and good relations with staff. 5- They should concentrate on the accomplishment of over all goal and Objectives rather than day details.

Factors should be assessed in decision making to delegate: 1- Potential for harm. 2- Complexity of the nursing activity. 3-Required problem solving and innovation. 4- Predictability of the out come. 5- Extent of client interaction. Process of delegation: 1- Select capable person. 2- Explain the task and outcomes to occur. 3- Give the necessary authority and means for doing the job. 4- Arrange to keep in contact and give your feedback.

*Delegation passes through the following :A- Assessment: 1- Review criteria for delegation: * Qualifications of delegator * Qualifications of delegatee * Appropriateness of delegations under practice 2- Situational assessment: *Assess the patient need *Assess the care setting *Assess the avaliable resources

B- Planning: 1- Plan for the tasks involved: * Determine the implications of the delegation for the patient and others affected. * Identify each task to be performed and knowledge & skills needed to perform that task. * Document, demonstrate current competence of delegatee for each task.

2- Plan for accountability: * Assure delegator acceptance of accountability for each task's Performance. * Assure delegatee acceptance of account. * Ability for proper performance of each task.

C- Implementation: 1-Direct the performance of the task and make the expectations of that performance clear to delegatee. 2- Monitor the delegatee's performance to make sure that policies, procedures, and standards of practice are properly followed . 3- Provide for proper documentation of all tasks.

D- Evaluation: 1- Evaluate the patient following completion of the delegated tasks. 2- Evaluate the performance of the delegatee in performance of the delegated tasks. 3- Obtain feedback and share that with the delegatee. 4- Review the overall care plan and make adjustments as appropriate.

-The five rights of delegation: 1- The right task. 2- The right circumstances. 3- The right person. 4- The right supervision. 5- The right direction, communication.

-Delegation obstacles: 1- Getting trapped in the "I can do it better my self" fallacy. 2- Lack of ability to direct. 3- Lack of confidence in subordinates. 4- Lack of confidence in self. 5- An aversion to taking a risk. 6- Need to feel indispensable and difficulty letting go. 7- Fear of losing authority or personal satisfaction.

- Why subordinates avoid responsibility or delegation: 1- First with manager's personality. 2- Easier to ask the boss than to decide how to deal with a problem. 3- Fear of criticism for mistakes. 4- Lack necessary information and resources to do a good job. 5- Subordinates may already have more work than they can do. 6- Lack of selfconfidence. 7- Positive incentives may be inadequate.
