MEMORANDUM TO: MR. ALFREDO CARLOS JR. FROM: ARGEL T. CRUZ SUBJECT: BEN REED DATE: JUNE 23, 2007

A. Problem of the Case

The main problem of the case is obviously Ben Reed. As a new employee to the Acme Medical Association, he can’t adjust to his new job, and he can’t adapt to the new culture; he had a culture shock. He often had conflicts to Mr. Charles Grayson, his immediate supervisor. Almost all of the suggestions made by Reed were often neglected and overlooked. As a 20-year veteran, Grayson knows what’s best for the company; he watched it grow in his own supervision. As a neophyte, Reed was unable to blend with the culture. Although he’s made good decisions, there is still a constitution that is being followed by the company. And I also see that he is not dedicated to his job. He felt that it was too easy to take it seriously. He is also making suggestions that are not very appropriate. He is new to the company, so he can’t just make suggestions, he is still not experienced. He is just not ready for the work yet, maybe he has an attitude problem towards Grayson. But maybe, Grayson can be the other problem, because he is not open to other suggestions, he feels that he is superior. He is insecure with Reed because he is making innovative moves, which outdates his “old-school” supervision.

B. Areas of Consideration

Stated on the piece, Ben said that his job in Acme was not challenging. He was bored in doing his job. He is very impatient and of course, all employees will start in a very low position with very low number tasks to do. He also works less hours compared to other employees. The main proof of these is when Reed made a plan to improve the progress of the company, and Grayson immediately disagreed to it and just get mad in front of all other employees. C. Alternative Courses of Action

Fire Grayson Pros: If Grayson will be fired, Reed can step up and make use of his own style to lead the company. Cons: It can be the start for the downfall of the company. Many employees that are “proGrayson” will eventually retire and can cause severe effects.

Fire Reed Pros: Once Reed is fired, the company will be back to its normal state, to its old-school image. Cons: Reed is innovative; it’s a loss to the company.

Promote Reed to a higher position Pros: He can be a good leader; he has much potential that can surpass Grayson’s. Cons: Grayson would be jealous; thus resulting to a much chaotic company.
