MEDIA ESSAY Danielle Haigh. Juno and Let the Right One In In this essay I will compare the opening scenes of Juno and Let the Right One In. I will explore the differences and similarities within both films to see to see how each fit into their completely adverse genres and what makes each film effective in its own manner. I will include the characters introduced within the first scene, the style of story that is revealed in each film and how each film would be taken by an audience. In the opening of Let the Right One In it is apparent right at the start that it is a horror film, the dark background and blunt opening tiles accompanied with no sound for around five minutes is typical of a horror film and confuses the audience as to what the storyline of the film will deal with. There is music throughout the scene the tempo builds up to a main point where the pitch gets higher, this in conjunction with the lack of sound at the beginning also indicates the genre of the film is horror. However on the other hand Juno opens with an establishing shot on the opening scene with a cartoon style title ‘autumn’ there is brief talking from the lead role which makes the audience ask why and watch on, then the opening titles take over the screen accompanied with instrumental simple music that some would class as indie indicating that the film is going to be that of a romantic comedy. The main character in both Let the Right One In and Juno the characters are portrayed in the same style as loners within society, Oscar in Let the Right One In is shown as quite sad lonely partly because he is bullied and some would say he has a tendency to do things that would make him seem quite mentally disturbed this could be because he is to some extents tortured by the bullying each day at school and what he gets called which he repeats at the beginning of the film to himself which indicated he may have underlying issues. This is similar to Juno the film opens to the main character alone then a close up to introduce her to the audience, this is the only person on set at this time within the opening scene also there are only a total of three more characters introduced. This also conveys the idea that she is quite alone and lacks all that of a normal teenager, her room for example is very unusual to most girls of her age its not pink fluffy or decorated with boy band posters it’s the complete opposite and her sarcastic choice of language accompanied with her dry sense of humour shows attitude and negative feelings towards life, maybe because she is lonely like Oscar.
With references to both films Let the Right One In and Juno I have compared the similarities and differences in the opening scenes between the genre, impact on the audience and the first impressions of the characters I have gathered. I have found that the genre of films is very different however there are similarities between the two main characters in each film and how they are portrayed to the audience.
