Section 7.3: Find Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion Subsection: Reviewing Mean, Median, Mode, and Range This section is brought to you by the following AKS: • Calculate the means and standard deviations of sets of data • Use means and standard deviations to compare data sets
2
Vocabulary Review The mean, or average, of n numbers is the sum of the numbers divided by n. The median of n numbers is the middle number when the numbers are written in order. If n is even, then the median is the mean of the two middle numbers. The mode of n numbers is the number or numbers that occur most frequently. There may be one mode, no mode, or more than one mode.

Working Backwards Flexibility in math is taking a concept and able to work backwards from an answer to get the components. Let's say, you have 6 tests this semester. On the first five tests, you make 75, 82, 91, 67, and 87. What do you need to make on the 6th test in order to have a test average of 75?
What grade would you need to have a test average of 80?
8
The average temperature for Monday through Thursday was 67, 75, 68, and 80. What temperature must it be on Friday in order to have an weekly average of 75?
What Friday temperature is need to have a weekly average of 70?
