Scene Tracking “Plot Events” are written in such a way to form a coherent narrative of the show’s plot if put next to each other, so sometimes overlap with the purpose of the scene. PreShow Location: Cleo’s Purpose: Introduce bar and Casey Plot Events: None? Scene 1 Location: Casey and Jo’s Apartment Purpose: Establish Casey and Jo’s relationship, trend of Casey’s financial irresponsibility, raise stakes of financial solvency with baby. Plot Events: Casey comes home from work to discover that rent is overdue, the bank account is overdrawn, and his wife is pregnant. Scene 2 Location: Backstage at Cleo’s Purpose: Inciting incident of drag queens coming to town and Elvis act ending. Plot Events: At the bar, Casey discovers that his show has been cancelled to make space for his boss’ cousin’s drag act. Tracey Mills suggests Casey stay on as a bartender. Scene 3 Location: Casey and Jo’s apartment Purpose: To raise the stakes of Casey’s financial success further with the risk of losing the apartment if he doesn’t pay the rent fully. Establish Jo and Casey’s relationship more fully as a loving partnership where Jo frets and Casey reassured her. Plot Events: Casey’s friend and landlord, Jason, warns Casey that he and Jo will lose their apartment if they can’t pay their rent in full. Casey and Jo share a tender moment talking about their hopes and fears for their child and reaffirming their relationship. Transition #1 Location: Onstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To transition, showcase Tracy as performer Plot Events: Scene 4 Location: Backstage/Onstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To get Casey started doing drag and show his early progression as a drag queen. Plot Events: When drag queen Anorexia “Rexy” Nervosa passes out before her number, Eddy and Tracy push Casey into going on in drag in her place. He continues doing so when Rexy fails to return to work the next day and grows increasingly competent. Scene 5 Location: Backstage at Cleo’s
Purpose: To establish a personal relationship between Tracy amd Casey and explain Casey’s aptitude for drag with his theatrical background. To deepen Casey’s investment in the drag world and establish that drag is financially saving the bar and has the potential to do the same for Casey. Plot Events: Tracy and Casey’s drag show starts bringing major money into the bar and Casey agrees to continue doing drag and work with Tracy to create his own drag persona. Scene 6 Location: Casey and Jo’s Apartment Purpose: To show that drag is going to solve Casey and Jo’s financial problems…and that Casey’s lying to Jo about doing drag. Plot Events: Casey’s earnings from the show promise a secure financial future for his growing family, but he chooses not to tell Jo about his new career. Transition #2 Location: Limbo Purpose: To show Casey’s growth as a drag performer. Plot Events: None Scene 7 Location: Backstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To discover Casey’s new persona and show the continued growth in Casey and Tracy’s relationship. Plot Events: Tracy and Casey continue to try to discover Casey’s drag persona and settle on an Elvis-inspired country/rock queen. Transition #3 Location: Onstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To show that Eddy, and the club in general, is undergoing an evolution alongside Casey. Plot Events: None Scene 8 Location: Onstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To show Casey blooming into Georgia McBride. Plot Events: Cleo’s emerges as a proper drag club as Georgia McBride emerges as a proper drag queen. Scene 9 Location: Backstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To show the club’s increasing growth and Jo’s discovery of her husband’s job. Plot Events: Everything’s coming up roses at the club when Jo stumbles in and discovers the secret Casey’s been keeping. Scene 10 Location: Casey and Jo’s Apartment
Purpose: To show that Casey and Jo’s marriage is in very real danger as a result of his lies and his work. Plot Events: Jo doesn’t understand Casey’s work and hates that he’s been lying to her about it. She’s pretty sure their marriage is over. Scene 11 Location: Tracy’s Place Purpose: To see Tracy as a real person and give Casey a push towards a final solution. (Lusie: I realize that a lot of reviews suggest that there’s nothing surprising about the way the plot unfolds, but I appreciate that Tracy doesn’t do the emotional labor for Casey our narratives train us to expect from folks culturally coded as femme.) Plot Events: After Jo kicks him out, Casey goes to Tracy for help. Out of drag, Tracy encourages Casey to figure his life out. Scene 12 Location: Backstage at Cleo’s/Onstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To give the audience a quick primer on the sociocultural significance of drag, to get Casey back in the saddle Plot Events: He winds up back at Cleo’s. After a talking-to from a pinch-hitting Rexy, Georgia McBride takes the stage once more and sings her own song. Scene 13 Location: Backstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To reconcile Casey and Jo Plot Events: After Jo watches Casey’s performance, they have a serious talk and agree that Casey should continue doing drag. Transition #4 Location: Onstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To show Cleo’s – and Georgia – as a fully realized creation Plot Events: Scene 14 Location: Backstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To establish a new status quo and a happily-ever-after: Cleo’s is booming, Casey is shining, Jo has a new job and new babies with her husband, and their future is secure. Plot Events: Georgia McBride, Cleo’s, Casey, and Jo all find their way – Cleo’s is a nonstop Dragstravaganza and Casey and Jo are able to provide a future for their children. Scene 15 Location: Onstage at Cleo’s Purpose: To have a fabulous closing number. Plot Events: The show ends with a fabulous closing number.
