Mountain Hope

Conference Successful On Thursday, March 5, over 60 people gathered at the Nada mission for a community development workshop led by Father John Rausch. The night offered a wonderful meal, time for fellowship, and networking among leaders, residents and volunteers for Nada and Owsley County. Both groups dreamed of how they could impact their communities including what they would want from churches and individuals by way of partnership. Most of the evening was dedicated to breakout sessions; one group focused on Nada adults, one group focused on Nada youth, and one group focused on Owsley County. During these breakouts Father Rausch encouraged the group to channel

their energy on what they can do now and determine what small step can be accomplished soon. The evening ended with continued discussion on “Where does this community go from here?”; a wonderful question for all leaders to be asking. This conference was another step in a long journey as we continue to partner through Mountain Hope in McCreary County, Nada, and Owsley County. If you are interested in serving or would like more information about these areas in Eastern Kentucky, please email [email protected].

We are a fellowship of churches and individuals who share a commitment to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ.

Living Faith Baptist Fellowship welcomed the Emmanuel Family, new friends from Burundi, at an Easter Egg Hunt and Fellowship Supper Sunday Afternoon, April 5. Through Kentucky Refugee Ministries in Louisville, the church has connected with the family of seven, who have never known life other than in a refugee camp until they came to Louisville. The family was selected by the church especially because two church members, David and Cathy Brandon, formerly were missionaries in Burundi. Since the Brandons speak the language of Burundi, church members were able to communicate with the family. In January church members traveled to Louisville to set up the family’s apartment with items that had been collected over the past year. David was able to be at the airport when their plane arrived to welcome them on behalf of the church. The older children are in school in Jefferson County and are learning to speak English; the parents are enroled in language class at Kentucky Refugee Ministries. The Easter Egg Hunt was a new experience for the children, who range in age from two to twelve. Sunday’s event was the first time most members had met the family. Future events are being planned to cement the relationship between the Emmanuel family and the church.

Make plans now to attend the CBF General Assembly Cooperative Baptist Fellowship General Assembly will gather July 2-3 in Houston. Welcome to your neighborhood - a new one, a global one, one where we’re all connected, one where Christ’s compassion extends to our neighbors down the street and around the world, one where we are changed as God changes lives through us, and one where - as one - we can make a world of difference.

Other Baptist leaders provided breakout conferences and served on a panel. This event was cosponsored by the Baptist History and Heritage Society along with several participating Baptist organizations. Clusters Are Successful By Bob Coons, Chair, Networking and Communication One of the top goals that came out of our recent visioning process was the creation of regional clusters. By clustering churches and individuals into geographical regions, we sought to provide more opportunities for people to experience Kentucky Baptist Fellowship relationships, share resources, and collaborate on missions within easy driving distance. Seven regional areas were identified for clustering and “Listening Sessions” were held in all but one of the regions. (Distance proved to be great a barrier for the seventh cluster to materialize.) The members of the Networking and Communication Workgroup did an excellent job of planning, recruiting and facilitating the six Regional Cluster Listening Sessions. Each of the Listening Sessions included brainstorming ways the cluster could meet the specific needs and desires for that region. All six of the clusters appointed a steering workgroup that would take the next step by developing a mission project, an educational or fellowship event, or implementing another of the identified goals. Additionally, Kentucky Baptist Fellowship has offered each of the clusters $500 in seed money to jump-start their cluster activities.

Regional Cluster Listening Sessions Central Corridor Cluster Host Church: FBC, Shepherdsville Four churches, 35 people

Western Kentucky Cluster Host Church: 3rd, Owensboro Seven churches, 17 people

Louisville Area Cluster Host Church: Buechel Park Nine churches, 43 people

Lexington Area Cluster Host Church: Central Nine churches, 18 people

Northern Kentucky Cluster Host Church: Latonia Two churches, 12 people

Southeast Kentucky Cluster Host Church: FBC, Corbin Three churches, 25 people

Grand Total: 150 people representing 34 different churches attended six Regional Cluster Listening Sessions

The Networking and Communication Workgroup is very pleased with the results of this initial effort and hopeful about the future of clustering in Kentucky Baptist Fellowship. We are eager to see what will happen in each of the six regional clusters during the next year. The members of this workgroup will conduct follow-up with each of the cluster steering workgroups and provide resourcing as necessary.
