Matthew Chapter 9 Verse 17 From EJ Hill & Friends HILL'S BIBLE COMMENTARY on MATTHEW CHAPTER 9 VERSE 17 by EJ Hill (1977-)

Significance Matthew chapter 9 verse 17 is of great significance to any debate relating to Doctrinal Reformation - as I'm often being told that someone isn't particularly "... certain about anything being capable of being reformed... since, you cannot put new wine in old wineskins", closely followed by "Why do we keep trying to do what the Master says cannot be done?" Basically, what is being suggested (which I was also taught at Miracle Bible College) is that both, the "old"- and "new wineskins" of Matthew chapter 9 verse 17, are referring to two distinct strains of Christian within Christianity - the "old wineskins" representing the more Orthodox/Reformed/Old-School types, while the "new wineskins" represent the more Apostolic/Charismatic/Pentecostal types. The above interpretation is EISEGETICAL, and not EXEGETICAL, in nature. In other words, WE DO NOT FIND THE ABOVE INTERPRETATION WITHIN THE PARAMETERS OF SCRIPTURE, but rather that of Imagination. Scripture Interprets Scripture. And since Scripture is no matter of "personal interpretation" (2 Pt. 1v20), let's see how Scripture itself would interpret Matthew chapter 9 verse 17.

Transliteration The Authorized King James Version of the Bible

"Neither do men put NEW WINE INTO OLD BOTTLES: else THE BOTTLES G779 askos BREAK, and THE WINE RUNNETH OUT G1632 ekcheo ekchuno, and THE BOTTLES PERISH G622 apollumi: but they put NEW WINE INTO NEW BOTTLES, and BOTH ARE PRESERVED." (Mt. 9v17, AKJV, p.425) [2]

Commentary Notes What does 'new wine' symbolize? Biblically, "new wine" is symbolic of THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT (Job 32v17-20; Acts 2v13); bringing sustainance (Gen. 27v37; Hos. 9v2), blessing (Deut. 11v14; Pr. 3v10; Joel 2v24), and joy (Ps. 4v7; Is. 24v7; Joel 1v5).

What does 'old wineskins' symbolize? What does 'new wineskins' symbolize? Biblically, "new wineskins" most likely REFER TO BELIEVERS; who as "new creatures" (2 Cor. 5v17; Gal. 6v15; Ep. 4v24; Col. 3v10) in a "new lump" (1 Cor. 5v7); walking in "newness of life" (Rom. 6v4); serving in "newness of spirit" (Rom. 7v6); following a "new way" (Heb. 10v20); speaking in "new tongues" (Mk. 16v17); receiving "new doctrine" (Mk. 1v27; Acts 17v19), pertaining to a "new covenant" (Mt. 26v28; Mk. 14v24; Lk. 22v20; 1 Cor. 11v25; 2 Cor. 3v6; Heb. 8v8, v13, 9v15, 12v24); fulfilled in a "new commandment" (Jn. 13v34; 1 Jn. 2v8; 2 Jn. 1v5); leading to a "new heaven and a new earth" (2 Pt. 3v13). What does 'spilling' symbolize?

Synopsis Scripture References "{17} I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion. {18} For I am full of matter, THE SPIRIT WITHIN ME constraineth me. {19} Behold, MY BELLY IS AS WINE WHICH HATH NO VENT; IT IS READY TO BURST LIKE NEW BOTTLES. {20} I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I WILL OPEN MY LIPS AND ANSWER." (Job 32v17-20, AKJV, p.253)

"So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall BURST OUT WITH NEW WINE." (Pr. 3v10, AKJV, p.291)

"Neither do men put NEW WINE INTO OLD BOTTLES: else THE BOTTLES BREAK, and THE WINE RUNNETH OUT, and THE BOTTLES PERISH: but they put NEW WINE INTO NEW BOTTLES, and BOTH ARE PRESERVED." (Mt. 9v17, AKJV, p.425)

"And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles." (Mk. 2v22, AKJV, p.439)

"{37} And no man putteth NEW WINE INTO OLD BOTTLES; else THE NEW WINE WILL BURST THE BOTTLES, and be SPILLED, and THE BOTTLES SHALL PERISH. {38} But NEW WINE MUST BE PUT INTO NEW BOTTLES; and both are PRESERVED. {39} No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better." (Lk. 5v37-39, AKJV, p.452)
