Continuous Process Improvement

Repeat loop (continuous process improvement, also called business process improvement or functional process improvement)

Contracting Officer

The only person authorized to approve changes to any of the requirements of a contract. Any developed process, procedure, or job aid used by EDS NMCI personnel to support the NMCI contract; documentation that relates to describing, implementing, and improving processes (for example, policies, measurements, process descriptions, process standards, models, frameworks, life cycles, and process implementation support tools).

Process Author

Responsible for developing or updating a process asset; presents the process asset documentation in a Peer Review; responds to reviewer questions; participates in document improvement discussions; and applies changes to the document after the Peer Review.

Process Business Rules

Guidelines or formulas that dictate the structure of an activity within a process (for example, design reviews must occur during the 10 days before AOR).

Process Constraint

Restriction to a process (i.e., what the process will and will not achieve); explanation of process boundaries and limitations; for example, issues, such as customization, access, consistency, geographic dispersion of process resources or users, and agreement among stakeholders.

Process Dependencies

All events, factors, players, and other processes that affect a process (before the fact or after the fact).

Process Documentation

Printed documents, electronic files, software, and other materials and tools (including cross-item links) related to a process, for example, job aids, reference materials, guidelines, templates, flowcharts.

Process Flowchart

A graphical view of the logical flow of major tasks and procedure calls within a process.

Process Input

Resource used by an activity to accomplish the activity’s purpose; all significant information, knowledge, guidelines, documents that are required to complete an activity or task within a process.

Process Management

Phases of process management as follows: •

Develop. Create a process by defining activities and tasks that must be completed, responsible personnel, sequence of completion, inputs and outputs, and by creating supporting tools, such as templates, databases, user guides, job aids, references.



Document. Develop narrative, flowcharts, presentations, Web pages, databases, and archives that describe and support a process.



Approve and Accept. Formally review and agree on a process that can be changed after approval only through the use of formal, controlled procedures.



Implement. Put a process into practice.



Monitor. Track process performance over time, using identified measures.



Improve. Analyze process performance and identify changes that will increase its effectiveness.
