2008 - UK-- Nunwood was named Best Agency at the Research Awards 2008 last night. The agency beat off Conquest, Firefish, Hall & Partners and FreshMinds – which has held the title of Agency of the Year for the past two years – to win the award. - FRANCE-- Ipsos has reported a 5.9% rise in revenue for the third quarter of 2008, up to €234.2m from €221.1m in the same period last year, according to figures released late yesterday. For the first nine months of the year, consolidated revenue climbed to €697m from €664.2m in 2007, a rise of 5%. Ipsos’s advertising research revenue was virtually flat at €150.7m for the first nine months as the firm switched to cheaper online data collection methods which depressed revenue growth, the company said. - GERMANY-- GfK is trumpeting its continued successful performance, despite losing to WPP in the race to buy TNS. The firm has received a £10.6m break fee after WPP secured acceptance from 82% of TNS shareholders for its buyout bid. - UK-- The long drawn-out battle for TNS is over with WPP declaring itself victorious last night after 82% of shareholders accepted its £1.1bn takeover offer. - GLOBAL-- Worldwide market research turnover topped $28bn last year, according to the latest report from industry association Esomar. - UK-- Experian’s footfall measurement practice has teamed up with a firm that studies the movements of shoppers by tracking their mobile phones, and will market the technology to UK shopping centres. Path Intelligence’s FootPath system is already being used by four major shopping centre owners in the UK, and the firm has plans to expand to Europe. - UK-- Virgin Atlantic has partnered with eDigitalResearch to carry out surveys into its customers The airline has designed several surveys about ticket buying that will be put to customers through eDigitalResearch's online panels on an ad-hoc basis. - UK-- Forty thousand households are to take part in what organisers claim is the largest piece of social research conducted in the UK. The study, entitled Understanding Society, has been commissioned by the government-funded Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) with a budget of £15.5m for its first three years. - FRANCE-- Ipsos has reported 4.5% growth in the first half – but flat revenue in North America. Underlying growth of 8.4% for the group was dragged down by negative currency effects, the firm said. Total revenue for the quarter was €462.8m. Organic growth in North America was 1%, while in all other regions it was 10% or more, and in Latin America it reached 20%. - US-- Nielsen reported a solid set of numbers for the second quarter today, with revenue up 12% to $1.3bn – but finance chief Brian West warned that the research giant was starting to feel the effects of the US economic slowdown in its consumer services arm. - INDIA-- Synovate has appointed Mick Gordon as managing director of its Indian business. - UK-- Ipsos Mori has renewed a three-year contract to conduct the Department of Health’s national survey of GP patients. As of next year the survey, which goes out to five million patients a year, will be based on a new questionnaire, collecting more detailed information on the quality of services at individual practices. - US-- Revenue for the top 50 US research agencies was up 6% in 2007 to $7.83bn, according to the latest figures from industry watcher Jack Honomichl. Growth for companies at the top end of the table was rooted in the single digits, with only Westat breaking the 10% mark. That revenue spurt pushed the government research specialist to fourth place behind Kantar, IMS Health and Nielsen. Web measurement firm Hitwise – bought by data giant Experian in a $240m deal last year – was the highest new entry in the rankings at number 37, coming in six places ahead of Compete – another web measurement firm making its Honomichl debut at number 43.

The two companies topped the list of the fastest-growing agencies, with revenue up 50% year-on-year in both cases. But at the other end of the growth spectrum was Public Opinion Strategies, reporting a decline of 48%. Overall, 13 firms saw sales fall year-on-year – almost three times as many as in 2006. 2007’s top ten firms by US research revenue were: 1. Nielsen – $2,173m, up 7.9% 2. IMS Health – $801m, up 8.6% 3. Kantar Group – $527m, up 3.5% 4. Westat – $468m, up 10.4% 5. Information Resources – $441m, up 2.1% 6. TNS – $380m, up 2.8% 7. Arbitron – $338m, up 6% 8.
