Case Study on Draught in Marathwada and Vidarbha
Draught in Marathwada and Vidarbha – MARATHWADA region has been reeling under drought condition since 2013. It is in a part of the scanty rainfall area of Central Maharashtra. The region coincides with the Aurangabad Division of Maharashtra. The region had faced several droughts in the past. Droughts have occurred in the years 1899, 1918, 1972 and 2012 onwards. The 1972 drought is in the recent past; which people still remember. In 1972, food and fodder were the main concerns, but now drinking water is more important. It is multi-dimensional drought. Global climatic situation is also playing in the process, which was not so acute 50 years before.
Causes – 1. Main Reason for Drought is insufficient rainfall in the area. 2. Poor selection of crops leads to improper farming i.e. crops should be selected as per the season. 3. Deforestation in area. 4. Improper methods of irrigation leds to increased use of resources like water, electricity and other farming resources. 5. Imbalanced use of ground water.

Drought had greatly affected agriculture in the region. Agriculture in the drought affected area is about impossible to do. As agriculture cannot be carried out unemployment in the region increases. Unemployment leads to financial crises in families based on agriculture. Some of the farmers have even attempted suicide. Owing to above mentioned reasons, Economy of the region has drastically dropped resulting in decreased GDP of region and state. Reduced agriculture the area leads to scarcity of food and daily essentials. Reduced essential results in malnutrition and increased [poverty in area. Drought also affects animal life in the area.
