ST. JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY – (March 19th) Although we know little about St. Joseph, what we do know shows what extraordinary trust was placed in him as the guardian of Mary and Jesus. Because of his role in the Holy Family he is the patron of families. Outwardly there was nothing unusual about Joseph’s daily life, and so many Catholics can identify with his ordinary labors as a carpenter and his devoted care for his family. We know that he was a strong man, a pure man, a prayerful man, and a wise one. Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus’ public life, at His death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph probably had dies before Jesus entered public ministry. Joseph is the patron of the dying because, assuming he died before Jesus’ public life, he died with Jesus & Mary close to him, the way we all would like to leave this earth. Joseph is also patron of the universal Church, fathers, carpenters, & social justice. We celebrate two feast days for Joseph: March 19th for Joseph the Husband of Mary and May 1st for Joseph the Worker. There is much we wish we could know about Joseph – where and when he was born, how he spent his days, when and how he died. But Scripture has left us with the most important knowledge: who he was – “a righteous man” (Matthew 1:18) Prayer: Saint Joseph, patron of the universal Church, watch over the Church as carefully as you watched over Jesus, help protect it and guide it as you did with your adopted son. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
If you remember just one thing from today’s Gospel, remember this: You are God’s temple, so take care of it. Just as Jesus cleared the Temple of all corrupting influences, so too does He want to cleanse us. Just as He was zealous for His Father’s house, so too is He zealous of each of us – for we are all temples of His Holy Spirit. But let’s put this story in perspective. Remember how encouraging and supportive Jesus is throughout the Gospel. Remember how much He loves you. Know, too, that He intercedes for you every day. Jesus is zealous for us in His passionate love, and there are times when His passion is directed against the sin in us – and that’s where we get the phrase the “wrath of God.” Jesus wants us to be clear: We mar this beautiful temple of our lives when we allow sin to overtake us. Whenever sin rules us in this way, our temple gets a little more darkened, and that upsets Jesus. Of course, His anger is against our sinful behavior, not against our hearts. But it is a passionate anger, and it’s something none of us ever wants to experience. So let’s choose never to cause the Lord to be angry with us. Let’s make sure that Jesus is first in our lives. Let’s make sure that we do not let any sin enter our lives and defile our “temple.” When we fail, let’s have the courage and humility to repent and be reconciled with the Lord. In short, let’s do everything we can to make the temple of our hearts as pure and holy as possible. Let’s also pray for the courage to evangelize. There are many people in the world who are corrupting their own temples.
