The Manchester Fire District services the Town and the Village of Manchester, along with the Town of Farmington. Other neighboring Response Units assist in emergencies based on the MABAS system. The 4-H GeoSeekers are playing an integral role in the system by developing maps of the water system, mains, and hydrants to aid Emergency Services in quickly addressing a fire.

This project is a collaborative effort between the Ontario County Emergency Management Office, the Manchester Fire Department, Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Program, and the 4-H GeoSeekers. 4-H members participating in this effort can be identified by their photo ID’s. Manchester Project Overview The Ontario County Emergency Management Office has been developing the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) in Ontario County. This system is used by fire, rescue, and medical service response personnel to identify resources available to address any particular emergency, depending on geographic location and intensity of the emergency. The Ontario County Emergency Management office has partnered with the GeoSeekers, an Ontario County 4-H club focusing on Geospatial Science, to map the location of every fire hydrant in the Manchester Fire District. In addition to these locations, they are also mapping additional fire response infrastructure, including dry hydrants, water main lines, disaster shelters, and specifically known hazards. This data will be turned over to the Ontario County Planning office who will generate the map books for the emergency responders. This project will positively impact the Manchester community with more effective response times in the event of an emergency!

What is a Global Positioning System (GPS)?

What is a Geographic Information System (GIS)?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in 2000, the government turned off the systems’ Selective Availability, and made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

A geographic Information System is a combination of elements designed to store, retrieve, manipulate and display geographic data—Information about places. It is a package consisting of four basic parts: Robust hardware, powerful software, special data, and a thinking explorer.
