In today's nuclear family scenario it is immaterial whether the child is a a son or a daughter. Basically this mantra is instrumental in the metros and in educated families where both the parents are working. Situation is different in the villages, underprivileged, uneducated and poor families where they need hands to work and earn. Besides this certain other factors like inheritance of ancestral properties/estate are also considered widely. The question of the hour is that the male-female ratio is decreasing despite efforts and regulations framed by the government to protect the girl child. Only celebration of day like DAUGHTER's DAY may not help to cope with the problem but overall awareness and involvement of the general public can be effective. NGOs, Hospitals & Nursing Homes and certain Task Force may extend their hands for spreading awareness on the issue, reasons to protect the girl child and to improve fair sex ratio. Spiritual leaders may also own the responsibilities to create an atmosphere in the society to honor the girl child. Once I attended a program sponsored by Art Of Living Foundation of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and was happy to note that they have taken the responsibility in this field and they are undertaking the job for spreading awareness and importance of girl child.
