INTRODUCTION Exponential
increase in the demand of transportation. Greater speed & efficiency required. Superior technology used by MAGLEV. High efficiency of system. Advantage of being faster, safer, smoother than conventional trains. Changing the face of future railroad technology.
HISTORY…. 1972:LSM
propulsion experimental super conducting MAGLEV succeeded in levitated run. 1980:Test run of MLU001 started on Miyazaki test track. 1993:Test run of MLU002N started. 1997:MLX01 attained 531kmph. 2003:600kmph achieved.
BASIC PRINCIPLE… As
the name signifies, it’s a magnetically levitated train, levitated above the rail by a magnetic force. Since ordinary magnets can’t be used to levitate a train, so its not as easy as it sounds. At present, the MAGLEV is still in an experimental state & the three basic ways of levitating are:-
ELECTROMAGNETIC A
new technology called the “Transpid” system . Uses the principle of electromagnetic suspension. Magnets embedded on the guidance rail & the under carriage oriented in same direction. Levitation up to 1cm.
ELECTRODYNAMIC(EDS) Train
travels on a guide way having a series of “8” shaped coils. Super conducting magnets induces a current on the coils. Polarity of “8” shaped coils & super conducting magnets are same in the lower half. Magnetic flux induced & the train is levitated.
Motion of the Train(EDS) The
train in motion along with the super conducting magnets induces currents on the guide way. Based on this principle the system inputs A.C currents producing alternate series of north & south poles. This push & pull of the super conducting magnet accelerates the train.
INDUCTRACK A
new approach to levitate high speed train. Fundamentally much simpler in design & operation. Much less expensive & very adaptable. Special arrays of permanent magnets are used. Totally Passive Technology (TPT) Has been awarded a 3 year contract by NASA to launch satellites in space.
PRINCIPLE(INDUCTRACK) Two
basic components:
– A special array of permanent room temp.
magnets mounted on the vehicle. – Track embedded with closed packed coils of insulated copper wires. – Magnets arranged in special configuration called “Hal Bach arrays”. Car
is stably lifted & stably centered.
Model Description…. Magnetic
Wheels:
– Circular electromagnets placed at the bottom
of the train. – Causes repulsion & train can float on track. Electromagnets:
BODY…. The
body is of two parts:
– 1.Track(Stationary) U shaped guide way which holds the train. Also forms a base to the rails made of magnets.
– 2.Train(Movable)
Main part of the body which is pushed forward.
External Power Source. An
auxiliary power source is needed to maintain the trains high speed against aerodynamic drag. Mainly employed in the “INDUCTRACK” system.
Latest On MAGLEV. China
made the first MAGLEV. First Transpid MAGLEV has started from Shanghai city centre to Shanghai Airport. Berlin-Hamburg Germany line: – This 292kms long line is expected to be completed by
2005.
January
2003
– Maglev Gets Off the Ground in China .It doesn't have
wheels, wings or a motor, yet it can travel at up to 600 kilometers per hour.
CONCLUSION From the movement of the train it is concluded that it has no friction so the efficiency is high. As it moves on electric power it solves the problem of pollution &
