National Sure Start Month 2006 Celebrating Early Years and Childcare and Archives Council and Bookstart.
Once again, June is National Sure Start Month and preparations are well underway across the country as early years and childcare practitioners get ready to celebrate the achievement of Sure Start and the services it offers to families throughout England. Registered childminders, playgroups, pre-schools, day nurseries, Sure Start Children's Centres, parent advisers, health workers, libraries, Children's Information Services and staff from Jobcentre Plus will work together to let parents know more about the support and services available to local families.
The month was officially launched on the 6 June, when the world's largest handpainting was unveiled in the imposing Turbine Hall of Tate Modern on London's South Bank. The painting, Little Hands, Big Flowers, measured 400m2 and was created by children in 16 Children's Centres and early years settings across the country. There is cross-departmental support for the month, with Ministers from the Department for Education and Skills, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport attending the launch.
National Sure Start Month runs from Thursday 1 June until Friday 30 June. Events and open days are being held across the country on the theme of Celebrating early years and childcare. The month is co-ordinated by a consortium of major childcare and early years organisations: 4Children, NDNA, NCMA, and the Daycare Trust, lead by the Pre-school Learning Alliance. Other partners include the Museums, Libraries
These celebrations have been reflected in big regional events taking place in Reading, Ipswich, Northampton, Sheffield, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, Bournemouth and Hounslow, in the run-up to the month. Sure Start settings will welcome families to celebrate the and carers achievements of the past year - with MPs, mayors and local councillors

SURVIVOR Lynda Bevan, who has written a book on how to deal with someone else’s anger.

Self-help route to better life LYNDA Bevan hasn’t had it easy — three times married, she has had to deal with some difficult relationship issues in her life.
■ BY CATHRYN INGS
She has coped with a series of demanding jobs including being a social services senior manager. She currently runs a Swansea Aids charity which deals with people who are suffering from the disease or are HIV positive. What better person, then, to publish a series of self-help books to deal with some of the difficulties life throws at you. “I am happily married now,” said Lynda, aged 58, from Glynneath. “But I have experienced a lot of difficulties in the past with control and jealousy.” Lynda published her first self-help book, called My Way: How to live in a difficult relationship, last year. She said: “I wanted to use my life experiences for the greater good of other people.” The book was such a success she went on to publish her latest book called My Way: How to deal with someone else’s anger. She intends to produce a catalogue of books called My Way within the next few years. “I noticed a gap in the market,” said Lynda. “There were a lot of books for people who are angry but nothing for people on the receiving end of anger from their partners. “In my latest book I have devised some simple
strategies to help people empower themselves in a relationship. “If you become disempowered in a relationship, it can disable you emotionally. “If someone is controlling your every moment, that is totally destructive. “The strategies are not difficult or clever, but they do work.” The book is simply written and is designed to be able to be read in just two hours. “Sometimes you are in a difficult situation and you can’t get hold of your mum or your best friend but you need help now,” said Linda. “I hope people will be able to have a look at this book and it will help them.” Lynda has 10 years of experience in counselling. After taking early retirement from her job in social services, she worked for the NHS and counselled in GP surgeries in Swansea, Clydach and Pontarddulais. “I counselled about everything really,” said Lynda. “Loss of role, depression, anxiety, stress, eating disorders. There is a whole range of problems that can emerge.” She is currently Swansea Sound’s resident relationship counsellor. bMy Way: How to deal with someone else’s anger is available at Swansea bookshops, price £8.
Work started
College open
WORK has started ahead of the demolition of a derelict Pontarddulais building. The three-storey building, in St Teilo Street, has been in a bad way for 10 years, according to some residents. It is due to be knocked down within a fortnight. Workmen have been disconnecting utilities at the building, in preparation for scaffolding to be erected.
GORSEINON College is holding an open day at its Kingsbridge centre next Wednesday. Staff will be available to provide information on the range of modern apprenticeships available at the college. Organisers say there will be a particular focus on courses leading to careers in the motor industry, customer care and business administration.
