A LETT ER FROM T HE PR E S IDEN T

WHILE THIS WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING YEAR in my tenure as president of this wonderful school, it was also one in which the seminary experienced God’s abundant grace through our generous friends and donors. Last fall Dr. Addie Butler, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) Board Chair, and I sent you a letter reporting on the seminary’s challenging situation, our responses to it, and the school’s need for your support. I am happy to report that our financial position at the outset of fiscal year 2010 is still challenging but sustainable because of careful and creative planning, and that the response to our request for support and contributions was met enthusiastically. At LTSP, we have remained faithful to our confessional and ecumenical heritage while learning flexibility and adapting to the changing contexts that God provides. The support of bishops, synod councils, the Vocation and Education Unit of the ELCA, and so many friends has been so heart warming that it is an honor to lead an institution of the church. The seminary will need this support as the economic crisis continues and the endowment recovers from its losses. The following are some highlights of giving in Fiscal 2009 completed June 30: ✛ Leadership/Annual Fund giving reached the highest levels in LTSP history, increasing more than 30 percent to approximately $850,000. Just a few years ago the Leadership Fund was $350,000. This increase follows a 26 percent increase in fiscal year 2008. The number of donors increased by 10 percent over last year. ✛ The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia gave $500,000 and $400,000 respectively for the William Allen Plaza project, initiated as part of the recent renovation of Germantown Avenue and the arrival of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod to the campus. ✛ We received a number of bequests that totaled more than $1 million. These gifts will sustain LTSP well into the future. ✛ Among a number of grants totaling $836,423 that support projects undertaken by the seminary, the Lutheran Archives, and the Eastern Cluster, we received a $325,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation for the Asian Summer Theological Initiative. ✛ The seminary’s capital campaign, Building in Faith for People of Faith, continues its momentum, and now stands at $18.4 million toward a $20 million goal. This represents an increase of more than $2 million since the beginning of fiscal year 2009. Our $20 million goal is in reach in fiscal 2010 and on schedule. We continue to respond aggressively to financial challenges. The board and administration of the seminary acted decisively to control costs and enhance the financial condition of the school. Because these actions have not entirely resolved the situation, we continue to plan

bold positive steps. Here are some steps we have taken and are taking to be good stewards of the seminary’s resources: ✛ Over the last two years, the budget has been reduced by 25 percent, representing $1.8 million in reductions. ✛ Beginning in 2008, the staff has been reduced by 15 percent through attrition and some layoffs. ✛ For fiscal year 2010, administrators, faculty, and staff are taking salary and compensation cuts up to 10 percent. This is to insure a balanced budget for 2010 that will draw only financial aid funds from the endowment. We plan to protect the endowment and at the same time keep financial aid a top priority to avoid undue student indebtedness. ✛ All capital projects continue to be suspended until resources are in hand to fund the project. We believe that the actions taken over the past eighteen months, coupled with the positive and generous response of the seminary’s supporters and friends, have positioned LTSP to meet the continuing challenges of this difficult economic climate. As you prayerfully consider your current and planned gifts and estate giving, we encourage you to engage others in that support: friends, congregations, family, and fellow alumni. As the number of donors and dollars increase, our mission and ministry is immeasurably strengthened for this year and the future. LIFE INCOME and BEQUEST GIFTS Life income gift arrangements make it possible to give a gift to The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) that will create an enduring legacy. Since the seminary’s founding in 1864, a number of quite modest sums have been bequeathed to LTSP. They have been carefully invested, and in many cases have grown to millions of dollars. Those gifts provide much needed income to the seminary for everything from general operating expenses to library resources to scholarships. The need to grow these endowed dollars remains a very high priority for the seminary because the more substantial the seminary’s endowment, the more secure the seminary’s future. With instruments such as Charitable Gift Annuities, you can be provided with income for yourself and/or others for either a set period of time, or for the duration of your life, after which the seminary receives a substantial gift. You may fund such a gift through cash or by gifting securities or other property to the seminary. The ELCA Foundation manages the investments of those assets and pays an income directly to you, your designated beneficiaries, or both. Income payments continue for the beneficiary’s life or, in some cases, for a term of up to 20 years for charitable trust arrangements. Why should you consider a life income gift to LTSP? Perhaps it is because you care deeply about the mission of this seminary. Perhaps it is because you care about the future of the seminary and more importantly the future of the church and the Gospel that is served by it.
