Assessment and Monitoring: (checks for content and desired effect) Observe students during problem solving. When subtracting, remind them that if the top number is smaller than the bottom number than they have to borrow from the closest column to the left and then cross out the digit to make it one less then the digit shown. When adding, if the sum is bigger than 9 they have to carry the 1 st digit over to the closest column to the left.
