Oliver Cromwell vOliver Cromwell was born April 25, 1599 vGrew up in the middle class vHe received a brief Cambridge education v1620- married Elizabeth Bourchier vExperienced economic hardships in his life and was forced to become a yeoman farmer for money vHis luck turned when he received an inheritance from his uncle

Cromwell and Religion

Cromwell was not very religious growing up 1630- Oliver Cromwell had a deep religious experience He now felt very close with the Puritan cause He felt God was going to give him a mission

Parliament Ø In 1628-1629, Cromwell was a Member of Parliament for Huntington but made no real contributions to Parliament Ø However, when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Cambridge he made more of a Contribution

Representing Cambridge

Cromwell became one of the biggest critics of the monarchy  Critiqued the Anglican Church  Called for annual sessions of Parliament  Increase of Parliament Power  Wants to revoke King’s right to name army generals 

Charles I and The scots



   

At the time, Charles the I wastes all of the money in the treasury He gets into a war with the Scots with Prayer Book No money for war Parliament, especially Cromwell, refuses tax levying Charles tries to arrest leaders but fails

Civil War Charles I begins to raise an army  Militia Ordinance passed  Allies with Scots  Cromwell head of cavalry  Cavaliers vs. Roundheads  Marston Moor 1644  Naseby 1645 

Legacy of Cromwell • September 3, 1658 he dies • England ready for monarchy and Anglican Church • Charles II called back from exile • Body exhumed • Hung and beheaded • Head on display outside Westminster Hall
