Приложение 2 Concerts In London London is a very musical capital. Every evening you can see or hear opera, or classical music, ballet or rock music. The Royal Opera House is famous all over the world for its productions and singers. But seat prices are very high. There are 3 concert halls near the National Theatre. In the summer, there are sometimes 1 or 2 free open- air rock concerts in Hyde Park. An audience of a quarter of a million people is a usual thing. Every summer, from July to September, concerts are held in the Royal Albert hall, and you can buy tickets at all prices. Serious music- lovers stand in the arena or in the top gallery, but you don’t have to stand, because there are plenty of seats. London Buses There are 2 main kinds of buses in London: the red double-decker and the red single-decker. There are a large number of routes in London. The main places the bus goes to are shown on the front of the bus. Some double- deckers in London have automatic doors, and you pay the driver when you go in. On the single-deckers you buy your ticket from a machine in the bus. But most London buses have a conductor, who will come round and collect fares. You can get a bus map of London at most underground stations. This map shows the routes for all the buses. But you ‘ll have to find the bus stop yourself. And remember to look for the number of the bus on the post at the bus stop. Double- deckers have seats for 65 people. Only 5 people are allowed to stand when the seats are full. So the conductor may stop you getting on the bus if there are 5 passengers already standing. 4
London Parks London parks are the most beautiful areas of the city. In the summer you can sit in St. James’s park by the side of the lake and listen to the band playing music. Green Park is a different kind of park. It is a quiet, wooded place. Hyde Park was once part of a forest. In our days, Speaker’s Corner of the park is always a center of activity. Public debates are held there nearly every day. Sunday is the most popular day. And you will usually find some people making speeches. There is a boating lake, and skating in the winter if the ice is 10 centimetres thick. There is an openair theatre where plays are performed in the summer, and a rose garden and a restaurant. Приложение 7 Text Car ban in Square goes ahead A Trafalgar Square is one of the great landmarks of London. Here you will find Nelson’s Column, two fabulous large fountains, and, most importantly, the National Art Gallery. Unfortunately, this great art museum is separated from the square itself by a wide and busy road. The traffic pours down this road incessantly, rarely pausing to let people cross. B And this is Trafalgar square’s problem. It is a massive public space which is completely surrounded by busy roads. Nowadays, the square is little more than a massive roundabout. The cars and buses dominate the square, and the pedestrians- visitors and Londoners both- struggle to enjoy visiting the square. C Fortunately, now is a time for change. The Local Government has an ambitious plan to regenerate Trafalgar Square. They have closed the road that separates the National Gallery from the square. From 6
today, the square has one side free from traffic and the change to the area is already incredible. People stroll from the gallery, down into the square. They are relaxed and enjoying the freedom from cars. D Soon, the old road will be covered and a grand central stairway will lead directly from the National Gallery into Trafalgar square. There will be open air cafes, lifts for the disabled and the square will be cleaned daily. Once again, Trafalgar square will be the place to be ! E But there are opponents to this change. Motorist organizations claim that road chaos will ensue, as drivers are forced onto fewer roads, and as diversions operate. They say the new road layout will worsen the already bad traffic congestion. F Other people claim that the cost of 25 million pounds is too high a price to pay. But the architect, Norman Foster, says the project will create a new heart for London by improving the balance between pedestrians and vehicles, and that it will be an excellent piece of urban regeneration.
