Location and Functions of Chlorophyll Pigments Prepared by: SPCNHS- BIOLOGY GROUP

• Plants are green because they absorb light wavelengths in red and blue and reflect green back out.

Cross section of a leaf • Mesophyll cells are specialized for photosynthesis. • These cells in the middle of the leaf contain many chloroplasts, the organelles that perform photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll • Chlorophyll is the part of the plant that gives plants their green color. • Chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight and turns the energy from the sun into usable energy

Structures of a Chloroplast • Grana • Stroma • Thylakoid

Grana • A granum (plural grana) is a stack of thylakoid discs. • Chloroplasts can have from 10 to 100 grana.

Stroma • This part of the process is generally referred to as the "light independent" reactions or "dark reactions

Thylakoid • A membrane-bound compartment inside the chloroplast. • They join the granum stacks together as a single compartment. • The first part of the photosynthetic process, often called the light reaction or lightdependant reaction, takes place in the thylakoids.
