Living World Part 1

Intro to Living Organisms and Kingdoms We’re all one big family!
What makes something “living” 1. Has to have at least one cell 2. Needs energy to function 3. Responds to its environment
4. Grows and repairs themselves 5. Reproduces

Grouped together as Monerans ARCHAEANS There are one celled organisms. They are found only in extreme conditions and they lack a nucleus (a structure that stores DNA)
BACTERIA There are also one celled organisms. They are found living in multiple conditions and they also lack a nucleus
E. coli Salmonella
PROTISTA These organisms have one or multiple cells. They are more complex than archaeans or bacteria. They have a nucleus.
Amoeba proteus
A. Di Lallo CRHS 2019
FUNGI These are multi-celled organisms which feed on others by releasing enzymes into the environment. They are important in decomposing organic matter.
Agaricus bisporus
Saccharomyces cerevisiae

PLANT These are multi-celled organisms which make their own food. They are immobile.
Rosa cania
Acer saccharum
ANIMAL These are multi-celled organisms which eat others for food. They have the ability to move. (With some exceptions)
Oryctolagus cuniculus
Danaus plexippus Pseudonaja textilis
The Animal Kingdom can be broken down into two main divisions Invertebrates: Animals without an internal skeleton
A. Di Lallo CRHS 2019
Vertebrates: Animals with an internal skeleton

What makes something the same species? There are three requirements 1. Share common characteristics 2. Individuals of the opposite sex mate to produce offspring 3. The offspring (when it grows up) is able to produce its own offspring
Levels of Classification 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
