Direct/Literal Questions • The most basic type of question in your comprehension paper. • It is a straightforward test of your understanding of the passage(s) given to you.
Direct/Literal Questions How to Answer • Underline and rephrase key words /expressions in the question to ensure question requirement is understood • Locate relevant portion of text containing the answer and highlight all relevant points using contextual clueing or by applying the Burger Model • Paraphrase all key points; avoid word-for-word substitution
Direct/Literal Questions Remember • When answers are not directly found in the text, you are expected to apply their inference skills (i.e. to be able to draw information relevant to the question by using the points mentioned in the text. • Answers that contain lifted words/phrases will not be given credit.
