THURSDAY Joe Christmas walks around, sleeps in the stable, thinks about Miss Burden, and later visits the different parts of the town (109). FRIDAY Armstid and Winterbottom see Lena walking (9). Armstid offers Lena a ride and she stays the night at his house with him and his wife Martha (14). Martha gives some of her money to Armstid to give to Lena (22). SATURDAY Brown says, at around 8AM Christmas killed Miss Burden and set the house on fire (96). The next morning Armstid drives Lena to Varner’s store, where she gets a ride on a wagon to Jefferson (27). On the drive her driver spots a house burning in the distance (30). This house burning is Miss Burden’s place (53). A countryman coming to town in his wagon saw the fire and went in, and Brown tried to prevent him from going upstairs (91). Brown shows up in the town and tells the sheriff that Christmas killed Miss Burden (93). Byron Bunch is working alone in the planing mill on Saturday when Lena walks in, and is disheartened to realize he is not Lucas Burch (50). Saturday, Bunch brings Lena to Mrs. Beard’s to stay the night (84). SUNDAY Sunday, Byron Bunch visits ex-minister Gail Hightower and details him the events concerning Brown and Christmas and Lena and yesterday (76).
