Press Report “Talk on Life Threatening Swine Flu” A one-day awareness program on Swine Flu (H1N1 Influenza A) was organized at the most serious and imperative moment by P. G. Department of Microbiology, D. G. Vaishnav College on 12 August 2009. Prof. P. Vidya, Head of the department delivered the welcome address. 600 participants including the students from various schools and colleges, teachers and lecturers participated in this program. The objective of this lecture was to disseminate the participants with the various facts of the H1N1 pandemic. Principal Dr. S. Narasimhan M. A., M.Phil., Ph.D., felicitated the guest and observed that the department of microbiology had at the appropriate time gone into organizing a talk on a contemporary issue. He also added that the staff and students of microbiology would spearhead a movement to create awareness about the Threatening Swine Flu set to sweep the city of Chennai through visiting schools in particular. The pamphlet containing details of the dreaded disease will be distributed to the school children. The team will also sensitize the students with talks and PowerPoint/Pictorial presentation. Dr. P. Rajendran former head department of microbiology Dr. ALM PGIBMS, Taramani, delivered a lecture on Life Threatening Swine Flu where he explained about the present outbreaks and the consequences. He unveiled that the H1N1 form of swine flu is one of the descendants of the strain that caused the 1918 flu pandemic and this communicable disease

unlike bacteria can affect any group of people from children to aged. He explained that this infection of western origin has traveled to our country through air transport. The emergence, nature of H1N1 symptoms, precautions, preventive measures and treatment of the Swine Flu was discussed. Prof. S. Vijayalakshmi expressed her earnest thanks on behalf of her department.
